Title: Vote for Vigo - He's not above begging
Post by: Vigo on April 04, 2011, 04:04:49 pm: A while back, Donkbaca posted a thread about the Instructables website having a video game themed build contest. I submitted my Super NES machine (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=107220.0). The contest is now in voting stage, and i am asking for you vote. It will only take a minute, I swear!

1) Just go to instructables (http://www.instructables.com/) and sign up for a free account. You don't even have to do any lame email authentication. Also, when it asks if you want a pro account, just say no.

2) Go to the contest page (http://www.instructables.com/contest/gamelife/) and find my posting. If you sort submissions by rating, I should be near the top. Click on it and on the top left of the screen, click the vote button. You can also give me a star rating on the info tab on the right side of the screen.

Thanks! That's it! Also, you should check out the other projects, too. There are some really cool things on there. :cheers:

Yeah, I check HaD daily. Instructables is nice, but there's just too many lame and poorly made projects to sort through sometimes. To add insult to injury, you have to log in to see more and more of the details in an individual projects. ---smurfing--- lame in my book.

I didn't dig too much into the Instructables article (I'm usually on my Android nowadays) but from what I saw, it's a very clean build. Especially the non-SNES ports around back which is where nearly every single craptastic hack of this nature FAIL making a mockery of the SNES. The wireless and USB<->SNES controllers are a nice touch too.

I think the only change I would have done differently is handle the cartridge slot and eject a little differently. Other than that it has my vote.

Yeah, Instructables takes a lot of sifting through to find cool stuff. One of the entries is telling you how to cut a shield shape out of cardboard for a Legend of Zelda Costume. It ends with just telling you to wear a green shirt while holding your shield.

Another thing that gets me is that half of the cool things I really like do not instruct at all, but is just somebody showing off photos of their stuff. It kinda defeats whole the purpose of the website.

Yeah, some of them is basically just eHow material. I came across one on how to make a shadow box for an NES cart. Sure, it consisted of:
Step 1: Buy picture frame.
Step 2: Buy duct tape
Step 3: Buy a scrap piece of velvet.
Step 4: Tape velvet to inside of picture frame
Step 5: Tape cart to center of velvet
Step 6: Hang picture frame up
Step 7: Listen to your friends comment how cool it is. (actual step)

Hell yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Those should be flat out deleted.

Post by: Vigo on April 05, 2011, 10:40:10 am: I really try not to be negative on other people's work, but some their stuff really feels like "Little Johnny's 3rd grade art project", and it kinda sucks to see me and some of the other really neat projects get our asses handed to us and be way outvoted votes by someone's "cardboard helmet". The projects I thought would be sitting in the top ranks for votes are definitely not there.

Anybody able to help me out?

Its a great project, and actually an instructable. Unlike the sweet R2D2 360, which is basically "hey look! I made this, come to my website and you can buy it for a butt load of money"

I know! R2D2 would be a really cool build....it sucks that it is just a sales pitch.

I have to say I am really surprised at how the finalist votes are swinging on this. I never expected the sewing/knitting/quilting projects to all do so well. I'm getting ---my bottom--- handed to me by a mario blanket. :lol

I am 4th for rating, but i am still a little behind on votes. It's a little harder to see the votes, as you need to go into each project to see the vote count. From what I can see, I'm in 11th place for votes, and a few more votes will put me in the sweet spot of the top ten finalists, as long as no last minute increases from other projects occur. :cheers:

I'm pretty happy to be in the top five for rating though! That's pretty cool!

Post by: Vigo on April 06, 2011, 11:20:42 pm: I think you are spot on. I was just looking over the competition. The kid who built a cardboard star fox arwing and duct taped it to his bicycle had 35 new votes today, yet he had only 70 views today.

Meanwhile, the Yoshi costume, which is actually really cool and is the top rated project, is doing much worse and only had a couple votes today.

You're right, if I threw in duct tape for good measure, I probably would have a ton of extra votes. :lol

Those instructables really take a long time if you want to do a good job. I don't blame you for not finishing it. Was it arcade related? Maybe you just gotta wait for a contest to motivate you, I'll be sure to vote for your entry. :cheers:

i just had a look at it, it's about 3/4 done i'd guess. maybe this weekend if i don't get side tracked i'll work on it some more.

That sound like a really cool conversion. I'm sure it can't be an easy instructable to write either. If you finish I look forward to seeing it!
