Post by: soyeux28 on March 28, 2011, 10:07:00 pm
simple question ... i want to make a custom control pannel...but man , getting HIGH RES excellent quality picture is impossible/near impossible ...(for example when you do some search in google image, you find awsome picture, but they alwaya are 1/3 of a meg...)

is there something possible to do with a 300k to 1 megs picture????(mostly 300k lol) they are "cartoonish" picture if it matters !

There are plug-ins for Photoshop that can do a better job at resizing images.  They use an algorithm that temporarily converts pixels to a vector representation which results in smoother, crisper edges.   I have run into the same problem you are having, you need to blow these up to such a large degree that they just fall apart.  There isn't much you can really do other than trying to find high res originals or vectorizing them.  Those examples you posted wouldn't fall into the 'practical' category of manual vectorization.  Hope that helps.  Good luck!!

remember, its not size that matters...  hehe at least not in the kilobyte size that is...  I did a quick google search for subzero, and sorted by large images... the first couple are under 300k, but the resolution is about 1700 x 2000 and others that are a little bigger and a little smaller...  at 1700x2000 that image would be ok printed out at 17" x 20".  and it would look good.  You dont need a 300 dpi image as most plotters only need a 100-150 dpi image.  That 300 dpi image of the same thing plotted out the SAME size would look almost the same.  And I am talking about a nice HP Inkjet Plotter.  When I do renderings from 3D Studio Max, I only render most of my models at 3600x2400 and print them out 24x36.  They look no different rendered at 7200x4800 and printed 24x36.  etc.. etc..  So use the 100 dpi method as a rule of thumb and you will be good to go...

Good point about dimensions over file size.  I guess I should have said, while 300 dpi is the best case scenario, you can get away with less.  =shrug=
