So I started my project about 2 years ago and had all intentions of keeping a work-log. For one reason or another I lost my documentation and ended up making some really bad mistakes that kept me from moving forward (it's amazing what you miss no matter how much you plan the first time you do something like this). Over the past 2 months I've gotten a second wind to clean some of those things up, and move along.
Anyways, it's a stand-up cab inspired by some of the other cabs I've seen in the forum. It's called Hadouken, but I haven't finalized anything as far as artwork. It's going to have a Playstation 3 along with a PC for MAME, but I built this primarily for Street Fighter IV, and now I can tack on Mortal Kombat 9, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and the new NBA Jam. It's been done with MDF and has a 26 inch LCD along with black laminate. Here's how it looks today (still have a lot of work to do, so I thought maybe I should start my work-log now):

Here is the control panel design that I've been working on, do you guys feel that it's too busy?

an xbox, playstation AND MAME! cool.
I am putting an xbox in mine. How are you switching between the three and sharing controls?
Don't forget soul caliber, tekken 6, the new WWE allstars looks cab friendly too, dc vs Mortal Kombat is cab playable, oh, and virtua fighter 5...
I like the way it looks. Get it done!
-
I think you're on to something good!.Keep going.. :applaud:
Yes, IMHO, the control panel is too busy. But, rest assured, I've seen worse ;D
-
Wow, Epyx's cabinet design is really getting the mileage! Good choice, and good job so far. :applaud:

As far as the CP goes, I would put the player 2 controls over player two. You are going to need start and select/back buttons for player two, also probably need home/guide buttons.
How are you going to exit games in mame?
How are you going to coin up?
The CP is busy, but it kinda has to be with all the buttons you are going to need, and I like the SF art, its busy but its all one cohesive theme.
-
The overall design is looking real good. Sometimes it helps to walk away from a project for a bit or all around change the direction. Keep it up.
The CP looks a little busy but as already said, at least it all goes together.
It looks like the shape of the CP is going to be a little sharp and pointy. I think with the lines of your cab, that a CP shape kinda like the Terminus cab (rounded front) would look really nice

Thanks fellas.....
Right now I don't know if I'm going to put a 360 in it as well, we'll see. I figure build some expansion in, then purchase a Red Ring, fix it or put one of my 360's in there once the next gen comes out. Thanks for the CP suggestions Donkbaca, I totally forgot about the 2nd player start/back. The Xbox/Playstation (home) buttons I figured would be the Aux but we'll see. I need to redesign that template. I haven't given much thought as to how MAME and the coin up are going to work, figured I would play that by ear. I also think the control panel design is too busy, that background can be changed on a dime so I'm going to mess around with some more designs. Really appreciate the feedback guys.
mgb, I've got 4 control panels cut, so I can mess around with that a bit too. Look forward to sharing the progress, I'd like to have this wrapped up by the start of summer so that I can enjoy it with my friends and start on a Vewlix :0)

Hmmm.. The more I think about it, the less reason I see to have an xbox AND a 360 because most games are available on both cabs that you would want to put in a cab, though, if you are a shmup fan, the 360 is better.
My buddy gave me his rrod 360 and I am using it for my cab.
All in all it's going to be good, you are off to a good start

Good start, cab looks familiar ;)
ill be following you
-
Martijn, I'm sure a lot of cabs look familiar to you around here :applaud: Definately inspired me to do the project. :notworthy:
I think it would be cool to have a PS3 and 360 in the cab for PSN and Xbox live exclusives, but I wouldn't mind a Wii in there too with Super Smash Bros. and Tatsunoko. My girls will use the Wii more in the coming years, so I may have to look for a broken one to fix.
Anyways, here is a quick CP redesign, something along these lines was an initial thought too:

Edit, newer revision.

Edit, marquee idea.

Now I'm liking that one! Good Job! :applaud:
-
I don't know, I kind alike the old one, but I don't really like chick characters in fighting games much.
anyhow, I like the button layout. Still need to figure out how to coin up, or are you going to have it be through the coin door?
-
You can always do the micros behind the coin rejects

Got some work done to the control panel:

The control panel looks really good.
-
Why are you showing the joystick mounting plates?
-
What format was the artwork in and what did you use to print it on multiple sheets of paper?
-
The joystick mounting plates won't be shown, that part hasn't been routed yet and none of that is finalized (the button colors on the top will change to all solid blue and player 1/2 buttons).
The plate was printed in Adobe Photoshop CS5 (300 DPI, grayscale), there is a really good tutorial on how to print that up here: http://www.ehow.com/how_7374037_print-across-multiple-pages-photoshop.html (http://www.ehow.com/how_7374037_print-across-multiple-pages-photoshop.html)
The characters aren't finalized either. But I feel good with how that looks, so I'll most likely stick with it.
-
Looking good. I'm not a fan on lots of extra buttons, but on a panel of that size it's fine.
-
im actully planning on putting a 360 into my mame cab too, was just wondering if your using a pad hacks for 360 do you wire them directly to the buttons (normally) or can you wire them into the ipac terminals. whats the model of those blue buttons?
-
Thanks mgb/emphatic
I'm not using an IPAC right now..... I've got 2 Cthulhu PC/PS3 PCBs that will be replaced with 2 Akishop PS360 once they get back in stock at focus attack (from the forums/documentation I've read, you don't need to solder or have a 360 PCB). The buttons are Seimitsu PS-14-KN Pushbuttons, which will eventually be modded with LEDs (KNsert LED Board with Toodles FGWidget LED Controller Kit).
I got some cat-6 soldered to quick connects last night, and hooked up to the Cthulhu. I'm hoping to finish out the routing to the control panel this weekend and test the board out for the first time.

So a crazy thing that has happened to my cab since I last posted. I've got a mini-fridge in my garage that I unplugged to power up some of the components in the cab and I forgot to plug it back in. During the course of about a week, the small freezer thawed and leaked out water which was luckily (sarcasm) sucked up by my unprotected MDF edges in my cab. In less than a week mold started to grow underneath the cab and around the edges where the water was sucked in.
I stripped everything down and worked on fixing the pieces over the weekend after letting them dry for a week (and cleaning up the mess). The good part is that the structural integrity doesn't appear to be ruined, and I was able to sand everything down and get the pieces back into shape to where I'm not too upset. Nobody should notice, but it's still another case of what can go wrong has gone wrong.
Anyways, I've about finalized the design on my control panel and the color scheme which I'll post pictures soon. I'm getting ready to prime and paint the interior of the cabinet over the next couple of weeks.

:badmood: That Murphy can go suck it. I hate that guy and his laws...
