K-Marts Sunday ad has a Curtis Mathes 25" Stereo TV with S-Video for $188.99 part number #1123719. Just thought I would post it for people who are looking for a 25"with S-Video (Not the easiest combo to find). I am going to take a look at later this week.

Thanks you for posting this. I looked all weekend for a 25 inch TV with S-video with no side mounted speaker and couldn't find a thing.
Big thanks again.
How wide is your 25 inch tv?

Perfect size. I'd like to keep it under 26 inches wide so I think this will work. Thanks again.

I actually picked up a 27" Sansui with s-video at Best Buy for $139! and it works great!
-chad-
-
I looked at the Sansui and actually have the 32 or 33 inch version in my bedroom. I think the 27 might be too big for the style of cabinet I usually build.
-
I actually have the 27" inch Sansui in my room as my regular TV. Now I was going to use that in my cab but doing a quick test on it (using S-Video and a Raedon 7500) showed the red bled quite a bit (especially in Donkey Kong).
How does your picture look? I ask because perhaps it's something I could fix (I used Mame 32 and Adobe Gamma was running -- a very unscientific test indeed).
-
To be honest I've never used the S video input on the Sansui, I think its hooked up via the RCA plugs.
-
You do have to worry about some cheap svid tvs I hear. Some have a cheap svid-composite converter inside so it doesn't really deal with digital input.
But this is coming out of my extended memory of a post I read and didn't have much to input from about a year ago...
And I did drugs in highschool...
so take it for what it is ;D

Will it retain S-video after teh TV is turned off over night?

I was gonna just say....I think I remember looking into these for a friend way back and the fact was that they did not stay on S-Video input after losing power. That's what I remember, can anyone confirm that?

if that's the case, at bestbuy.com you can get a toshiba for ~40.oo more. Well worth the extra money IMO..
-
there is a 27" philips at best buy with component in, svideo in, and 600 horizontal line res for 230.
-
Its true. Not all tvs are created equal... and you really do get what you pay for.
Being that youll be trying to enjoy the cab for a long time... its well worth saving and spending the extra money for a quality tv rather than a cheaop that last half as long, colors arent as bright and fades quickly, resolution isnt high enuff for the med-res & window games... ect.
I bought a panasonic 27" with svideo & component for about 300$ - arround a year ago I think, at bestbuy. Its pitcure is unbelievable.. and I highly recomned it.
One thing I looked for was the color of the tube when its off. Its almost a solid black ... meaning better contrast pitcure. The other was the colors and maximum brightness. And of course, a high resolution (600+).
The one that was out of my financial grasp at the time was a sony flat faced tv... and I kick myself... because I think the flat face crt's give off a sharper more vibrant overall picture.

Taking a quick look at the TVs on bestbuy.com. They are a bunch of options for around $200. I don't know the difference, but it's pretty obvious when one is better then the other for many things.
How important is horizontal resolution? I'm assuming very! Ones with higher resolution usually also have some of the nicer features.
But there are definetly a few with 600 Hor Rez for 200-230. And these don't have local sale prices.
So I would probably hold back on the 188 if people are having trouble with the svid. Off name and so far, bad quality doesnt' seem worth saving 20 - 40 bucks.
-
For me it isn't really a price issue as much as it is an issue of finding a relatively narrow 25 inch TV with S video input. There are simply very few TVs which match that description.
-
Look at bestbuy.com They have free shipping on TV's so you know what your in form.
They have lots of options!
-
mine will be coming out of the case. and that will be stored away.
any 27" will fit out of the shell, simple trig :p

I've got the Sansui 27inch running in my cab with a radeon 7500 and s-vid. No problem. It'll fit in Lusid's cab.

I used a 27" JVC that I got from Best Buy. It seems most JVC's will power on when you flip the surge protector on (most TV's stay off when you toggle the power at the cord), plus it stays in S-Vid mode. And it fits just fine in my 26" wide space (like lusids).

I may play around with it more while I have the time before my cab is completed. But even yesterday I played GALAGA ARRANGEMENT on the Namco Museum for PS2 and the reds still smeared all over the place. Perhaps it's the S-Video cable? Perhaps it's my TV settings? I'll have to experiment and see.

I bought a $200 TV once. I wasn't dissappointed so much as to take it back, but I wouldn't recommend it, and I won't do it again.
I don't like how it displays my PS2 games. I did however compensate for that by using a video calibration dvd. Its got the tests and shows you how to make your tv display the best picture its capable of. I highly recommend getting one if you are having problems with bleeding colors, I was.
I wouldn't skimp on the TV at all. I have seen super nice ones for around $300- $400 with component video.
While I am at it, why is the svideo so popular now when the TVs with component input are coming down in price? I know I can get (or at least hack,) a compenent video connector to my card, and its just the original AIW Radeon.
Way back in the day, Curtis Mathis was a big name in tvs, they were just so costly to repair, and thus they went under and now have emerged recently. We had one(from the early 80's.) Played the Atari 2600 super...wait thats not too taxing. But seriously, it was a good tv. Speaking of companies that are going under, I severly dislike K-Mart, always have. My disliking of K-Mart was increased exponentailly when the started to carry Martha Stewart products almost exclusivley. As a matter of fact, I don't even know where the closest K-Mart is where I live.

To me that is almost the most important feature when putting a tv into a cabinet. Ask the guys that have done it and most will tell you how annoying to have to use a remote to turn the tv on. Especially when you can't find the remote. You also need to make sure the remote sensor on the tv is exposed. The other options are to leave your power button accessible, which doesn't look very arcade authentic or to hack a remote power button into your tv.

What is the model number of the JVC you are using? 27" with 'return-to-Svid' and 'auto power on after unplug' sounds perfect for an arcade monitor. And if anyone else has a TV with these features, please post.

I have one of these and it retains S-Video quite well. Never had a problem with it.

Can we get some exact model numbers of the JVC's that work well (s-vid and power). I'm about to buy a new TV for the family and might try to get one that 'could' work in a cab... if needed...
