I just ordered some El Wire to play around with, possibly to use on my control panel. It runs off a battery back containing 2 AA batteries. I'd like to run it off 5V from my computer. Can anyone tell me the type or circuit I'd need to use? I am guessing its just a matter of installing the right resistor, but I'm not sure of the calculation.
Thanks.

AA batteries output voltage varies based on composition. Alkaline produce 1.5 volts. Lithiums are 3v, and Li-Ion rechargables about 3.6 volts. If its running off of 2 aa batteries now you are producing between 3-7.2 volts output. Have you tried just hooking up 5v to see how it reacts?

I don't have it yet. I am just concerned it will act like an LED and "pop" if I provide too much voltage. Is there a fundamental difference in el wire where that isn't an issue?
Thanks.

You might be able to pick up a USB inverter on eBay. I have one of those battery pack EL wires setups for a costume I am building for my daughter, but once she's done with it I might repurpose it for my own use. The USB inverter might be the way to go.

I was gonna suggest the USB inverter also. They can be had for 5-7 bucks, if you're in the US...

Id say try it with 4 batteries first (6 volts). If it doesnt fry anything after a few minutes it should be ok at 5 volts. If it does fry, buy the USB inverter. I dont think you will hurt the wire itself.
