Title: Problems with a Rowe R-90

I bought a Rowe AMI R-90. After troubleshooting it I manage to get working except that after it finishes playing the record it does not cancel. The cancel light on the Mech Board does not turn on when the music is done. I have to press the cancel switch by the counter to stop the record spinning. I've checked the wiring harness and it seems to be in good shape. If any one has any idea as to what may be malfunctioning, please help!

Did you check the wiring for continuity?

Magnetic cancel switch working?

Hello,

The problem is with the reed switch that is mounted on the tone arm cutoff board assembly (part number 3-07938-02) the reed switch part number is 2-110726-02.

First thanks for the replies, I really appreciated. I did check the continuity on the wiring harness and it was good. The reed/magnetic switch looks like it is always close, even with the magnet going over it, it is still close. I don't know if it is suppose to be open or close.

Hello RnR,

As I said the problem is with the small reed switch, this needs to be replaced there should only be closed when the magnet goes over it to signal the rejection of the record.

Thanks for the response. I did check the website you recommended and the reed switch was not available. I did find other websites that carry it but not under the part number you gave me. I found one at Jameco it is 1Amp at 220VDC, will this work?

They used to have them but sadley they are reducing stock.

If the reed switch from your sourse is small enough and the wires can be bent at 90 degrees and then cut to size then get one from there.

Bruce Wentworth is selling the complete assembly (cut off board) at $30.

Finally received the reed switch and replaced the old one with the new one. I reinstalled the cut-off board assembly back into the jukebox and it worked. But now it cancels to early and I adjusted the board as much as I could but it still cancels early, about half way through the song. Any ideas?

Hello RnR,

I assume that you slackened the screw that allows the plate to be moved in or out  for the end of record and then re-tightened.

Did you make sure that the reed switch was central between the two sockets on the cut off board?

Yes I did solder the new switch just like the old was. I attach some pictures of the board. Could it be the mech board assembly?

Hi RnR,

Pull the plug on the cut off board.
Put a meter across that reed switch when in operation and test for making & breaking with the magnet on the tone arm, is the magnet there? usually you can hear the reed operate.

I chekced the switch with a meter while in operation with the cut off board unplug. When the record starts playing the switch is open but as soon as the magnet gets close to the lead of the switch it closes and that's about half way through the song. I had the cut off board adjusted as far as I could adjusted.

Hi RnR,

I can see from your photo's that you have cut the slot bigger to allow for more travel.
It could be that you have soldered the reed in upside down which may effect it.

I suggest that you unsolder the reed and move it more towards the edge of the plate, you can extend the other end by soldering on a piece of 45 amp fuse wire (coil it round a paper clip so it looks like a spring with a leg on it, this can be slipped ovet the reed wire and slightly copessed to for a good soldered joint).

I've been busy but finally got a chance to try what you suggested and it didn't work. Could it be that I need to use a specific reed switch? I think the switches I have purchase are too sensitive because as soon as the magnet comes close to the lead of the switch it closes. The magnet does not even make it over the glass tube. Maybe needs a new magnet? Any more suggestions?

you could try maybe placing some metal on the magnet to weaken the magnetic field.  :dunno

or even playing around with the orientation of the reeds....they do have a north and south magnetic pole, spinning the switch 180 degrees so that the other reed is on top may help. or even turning it 90 degrees so the edges of the switch are up instead of the flats may change the responsiveness too.

Finally gave up on the reed switch idea and ordered the cut-off board from A&B Jukebox and it worked perfect. I did realize that the reed switches I bought are different from the cut-off board I just bought. Thanks for everyones advice and help!
