Title: The Andropolis Arcade - artwork in progress
Post by: Arch on March 04, 2011, 03:09:10 am
Hi,
I am currently MAME'ing a JAMMA cabinet. Even though I love the shape and wood on the cabinet itself, the marquee, cp and bezel on it is so ugly that I neither can't stand it nor stand for it occupying that square meter in my office. So I have decided to redo all the art on it and post the work in progress here if you guys don't mind. I have gotten as far as picking a theme and doing some Illustrator work.

I've picked the Andropolis theme from a demo me and some friends did for the good old Commodore 64: Andropolis By Booze Design & Instinct (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLP-poYbfos#) The idea is that an old tribe of giant alien androids who have been dwelling under a city for thousands of years suddenly wake up and surface. Go figure.

Anyway, here is the first workstage of the marquee just after vectorizing it. The plan is to use the live paint function in Illustrator to colorize it. I have bought some nice green joysticks and pushbuttons so I am thinking I will go with a greenish theme in the art as well. Hope you like it. Comments are of course welcome. :)

Here are the results of tonight's Illustrator session. After a fair share of browsing oldskool marquees I have decided to go for a colourscheme with a yellow logo. I suspect that this will work wonders once backlit. As for the rest, I am kind of undecided. The guys will have to be green I think, in keeping with my bright green balltops and pushbuttons. As for the colour of the sky an such I will have to sleep on it. Even though there is a bit of detail work to go I am starting to see then end of this now, and I will do the cp next. I would love to do sideart as well, but my JAMMA cab has such a nice wooden finish and putting sideart on that would look strange.

Really cool and unique -- I like how it has sort of a "cell shaded" look.

Hi again,

Here is a work in progress shot of my planned mala frontend layout. I just invested in Emumovies, so hopefully I will be able to play the clips in the "monitor" on the guy's back. :) More to come here (obviously), and I still need to wrap up the marquee and the cp.
