I broke 80k on a dedicated Ms Pac Man w/speed up last week and thought I was cool. I guess not. :applaud:

No, thats not all! You have to give some details.
What stage? At what level do you quit eating all the ghosts? How did you break 120k? Did you get some good random fruit or did you make it further than you had ever made it before?
-
Wow, I didn't think anyone would actually be INTERESTED in how I got there..... :o
First two boards are point pressed - perfect scores, eating all ghosts, fruits, and dots -- 14,600 after board 1, and 14,800 for board 2, totaling 29,400.
After the first intermission, the maze changes and it's more important to clear dots from the bottom section of the board. I usually clear as much as I can except around the power pellets. Then I start trying to group the ghosts in packs so I can get at least 3 (if not 4) each time I eat a power pellet. Often times I'll keep running through the tunnels on both sides to get them grouped. That pretty much gets me through the peach, pretzel, and apple boards. Although by the time I get to apple, I'm usually more interested in clearing the board than I am at eating ghosts or fruit, since they (the ghosts) start to speed up pretty fast, and it's harder to get them grouped.
Then the 2nd intermission comes, and the board changes again. There's a part of the maze directly below Ms Pac Man that is a trap if you get caught in it, so I always clear that immediately. I also clear the bottom corners right away too, so I don't get trapped there. A picture of my path is shown below. From there the pear and banana boards are what determines whether or not I'll have a good score or a GREAT score. The ghosts stay blue longer on the pear board, so grouping to get all 12,000 on the ghosts is essential on that board. Fruit becomes more important here, going to 2,000 on pear and 5,000 on banana.

The banana board is all about fruit, and clearing the board.
If I get lucky on the first random board and get banana again, I'll easily break 100,000.
Then it's intermission time again. Board changes design again. I've only gotten to boards 10-14 a handful of times, so I don't have any sort of pattern set up for these boards. I'm just trying to navigate as quickly as I can. Furthest board I've gotten to at this point is board 13, I believe - that got me 116,000 and change. Last night I hit 120,000 and died on board 12, so my point pressing is getting better. I also got lucky on random fruit on board 8 and got pears for fruit, so that helped.
My limitations at this point are my joystick (Ultimarc U-stick, which is WAY TOO STIFF) and my reflexes. I'm simply not fast enough to anticipate turns when I get to unfamiliar territory. I'm sure practice will help with that, but I'm not going to get much further until I start playing on a dedicated leaf 4-way stick. My Ms Pac Cab is currently under restoration, so it won't be long.
I know there's tons of books written on the subject and I'm probably not following the 'creed' for this game, but this is what is working for me. Like I said, I play one game a day, on 1 credit. I doubt I'll be calling Twin Galaxies any time soon :)

You think that's bad.... try playing the game on the 360. Ugh... (I know, apples to oranges, but...)
-
Oh no, really? That's what I've been WANTING to put into my MAME cab on the P1 side. So Ms Pac is a no-go with that stick, huh? Bummer.
Maybe I'll see if I can change out the spring to something less stiff. Don't get me wrong, I love the old U-sticks and the fact that they fit in a button hole and can be switched from 4-way to 8-way, but MAN that spring is stiff. If I play for more than 10-15 minutes on it, I get blisters.
Too bad they didn't make a ball-top for it.

the xbox controller thumbstick has WAY too much play in it. I, way too often, end up missing an intended turn and end up often having to make a lap or two around the board to get back to my spot. If there's a better Xbox controller for the job, I'd suggest trying it, but offhand.... I couldn't tell you of one....
-
4 way hardware restricted leaf is the only thing that feels right... and it just "Feels right"
Good job on your score!

So if you haven't figured out yet, he's talking about the Xbox 360, not the Ultrastik 360.
-
Ginsu, thanks. I nearly missed that. *whew*
....runs off to figure out how to install his 360 controller.......
-
Yes, the U360 is fine for Ms Pac. I play it all the time.
-
I bought the Hori EX2 fighting stick for 360 pac/Ms.pac and swapped out the restrictor plate with a 4-way one. It is still to loose and I absolutely hate the clicky-clicky sounds.
-
My bad... didn't realize you and I were talking about a different controller.. lol. But yea, the original XBOX controller's not very good at all for cornering in Pacman... at least the Xbox LIVE version of it.

Such will power and restraint..... But why?
Indulge! Maybe you could make a run at Dom Zito.

Yeah, I'm not going to hit 900,000 ANYTIME soon. But they, my 120K would be good enough for 20th place - not too shabby. Maybe it's time for a trip to funspot, eh?
-
Considering I've probably only played maybe 100 games total in my life, I'd say it's not a huge score. I've never read any books nor attempted any sort of strategy.
But every time I've played, I just never could seem to break 100,000. Then on New Years Day I hit 104, then 2 weeks later I hit 116, then 2 days ago I hit 120. So I'm proud of myself :)
Just tooting my own horn.

I know what you mean, man. I've been trying to crack 150k on Robotron. I'm almost there.
-
Really? It only takes about 7-8 minutes for me to get that far in the game, since it's so fast. That's one of the things I like about Ms Pac w/ the speedup hack. You can pump out a full game in less than 15 minutes. Getting that far in Pac Man or Ms Pac Man slow would take AGES.
I think I'm going to shoot for 150 and then I'll lay off a bit. That should put me in board 17-18 I'd guess, and from what I read, it appears that there's no more ghost eating or high point fruits to be had at that point. It's all about clearing more boards. (with random fruit)
How many boards are there? 256? Is there a kill screen? Am I retarded for asking this since I'll never get there?
-
The hardest part about Ms. Pac-Man with the speed-up hack is not running into ghosts. Patterns? Meh.
-
I've never really tried the speed up hack but I can get over 80K on the regular version pretty routinely. I've never cracked 100K though.
-
I also prefer the regular version and ya same about 60-80 pretty regularly and also haven't cracked Ms. Pac Man since the early 80s.

I didn't think I would like it until I played it on a dedicated. We have a couple of them in town that are set to speed up. I really prefer it now. It is a very different game.
-
It's WAY easier to play on the speed up chip. You can buzz around the board all over the place. Folks are right, the biggest risk is running into ghosts.
I bumped my high score last weekend, but only by about 500 points. I'm now at 120,950.
I'm realizing that I'll need to get some patterns down to carry 3 lives into the banana level if I really want to break 200K.
