I'm still using my .96 ROMS and I've built a few cabinets now. I upgraded from .83 when I built my first true cabinet. For me, .96 is fine 'cause it handles what I want and I couldn't discern a difference between MAME and actual arcade hardware at my level of skill anyway.

I just do it after a while when I have the time or feel the need to see what games are now working. Maybe one to four times a year.
It can be a pain...and it is a lot of wasted disk space especially when you have several games that are a couple of gigs and they don't even work. But I like seeing all the added stuff...I find some of it interesting. I must admit that 98% of the games that I am interested in are already added and playable though.
-
I tend to update every other major update after u1 or u2 has posted as well to get the silly bugs out. :P
-
I just updated to the latest version (.141) and snagged a 24g torrent of roms. I figger'd that would be the easiest way to get the most roms that worked. Turns out that kinda backfired. There's soooo much crap you need to sort thru to get at what you want. And some stuff that really should be there and working (STUN Runner, Arabian, Gaplus) don't show up as working. And I've run across more than a few that do show up as good, but fail to load and give me a missing file error.
I still use an "ancient" version (32b.037) for pc monitor use since it was one of the last versions to have a good looking scanline effect. Plus, that has all the old classic roms working that I spend years tracking down.
Its a PITA really....
-
I update at every keystone release (IE: 140, 141, 142, etc.). Sometimes I'll update to a update build (IE: 141u1) if there is a game in that release that I'd like to play before the keystone release.

I actually have no idea what version I'm using or ROM set. I dl'd a 30gb torrent of mame roms then compiled a version of mame using what ever was out in the middle part of 2010 and added high score support and disable warning screens.
-
You guys will laugh at me....
I had a low spec PC in the cab and stayed at .84 for like ever. Loved .84 for everything including CoinOPS.
Now I have a screaming beast of a PC and I still have .84.
No more torrents, so I'm stuck at .84
At least I can play MK and NBA Jam decently.
-
Still on .95 here. Plays everything I want it to and has high score support. I'll probably move to a more recent release when I finish the cab I'm currently building but other than that I see no reason.
A lack of decent internet access at my new house may also be a factor.

I skipped 0.141 and went straight to 0.141u2. Arabian and Gaplus work fine for me (I apparently don't have Stun Runner). Did you try the latest u2 update?
-
Mine is U1 I believe.....lemme check it...
Yup.....u1. Still....those roms *should* work. I dunno how old the batch of roms was...really no way to tell unless its marked as good for a certain version.
-
How do I get the U2? Do I need to patch the thing myself? Or is it downloadable somewhere?
-
Just download the EXE and replace the existing one. Then do an "audit all games".....

Pretty much what I do...I update every version as there are still favourites I play that I pray each update addresses in a positive fashion :)
-
I think I only updated my MAME once and I don't even really know why I did. I figured I wanted one MAME instead of three. I don't even know what version I'm running anymore.
-
I've obtained one version of MAME or another since 1996 or so. Usually the only reason I update is because I lose that version I had through a reformat or pc change or when I lose the backups or whatever. I just downloaded 141 but I'm still using 111.
Once you configure and tweak so many games, its a damn hassle to do it all over again.
-
I used to update every major release but I quit a while ago, seemed ultimately a wasted effort.
If the MAMEDevs ever get Raiden II working I'll update my set again but until then I'm content with what I have.
-
I.might wait until the next major upgrade: I.e. naomi, sega model 3, laser disc or neo geo 64. Might never happen which is fine with me.
-
I like how the leading poll choice is "whenever i have free time, for no particular reason" WTF? Who are you people? "Hmmm, soooo bored, nothing to do. I know! I'll update my MAME!" That NEVER crosses my mind...
-
I voted that...and I only did because I don't update for any real reason. Most times I don't even pay attention to new Mame builds. Then one day I will notice a new build and notice that it has been a few builds since I updated...and then i will take a weekend out to do it. LOL
But none of the other choices really fit. I don't update Mame because I am bored, but I usually don't have a real reason. I mean I will also do it out of curiosity on what other games are working now. (Which is usually not much)
-
if Advmame get an update, sure will be worth upgrading ;D
-
Who are you people?
The plurality, I guess. ;)
-
Yeah, because it's boring to update, not fun. So if I'm bored and have nothing else to do, then I'll do that.
-
Wow, you guys make it sound like it's a major undertaking to update... It takes me about 15-20 minutes to update and most of that time is spent on the compile.
1. Download new MAME source and hi-score diff.
2. Compile MAME
3. Connect to update torrent & download update set
4. Merge/update/Rebuild ROMs via CMP
5. Audit new set
6. Connect to full torrent to seed

15-20 minutes? That list would be a weekend project to me. I almost always encounter errors during the compile (usually always my dumb mistake, but still). If you can all that without blinking an eye (and I'm sure many of you can), then yeah it's not a big deal.

Compile using MC64 (http://www.headsoft.com.au/index.php?category=mame&page=mc64) and you shouldn't encounter any issues. MC64 makes really easy work out of compiling MAME.
-
A vote on newest versions because there are a lot of update on old games also. For example the shifter displayed in OR, Chase HQ, Pole Position, sound fixes for point blank, working Lethal Enforcers and other gun games reload with lightgun etc.
-
Does the newest version of Mame have both fast Ms. Pacman and fast Galaga shoot?

That's exactly what I've used actually.
I've really only compiled anything twice (both MAME) so even with the tutorials, I still encounter hiccups. Mind you, I am ultimately successful - but just not in 15 minutes.
I'm sure if I did it more often, I'd get better at it.
-
yeah i use MC64 too, I only upgrade on the full versions, 139, 140 not 139u1, 139u2. A lot less steps, and not really worth it to get the minor upgrades for the small updates.
hmm.. I cant's say I've seen any real benefits to my updates since I started not too long ago. It had to do more with an obsession of being up to date in case new games were playable.
-
You all realize you can check out the "what's new" section for each release to see what changes are made to which games right?
-
Its usually about a 3 version or more jump. I mostly play donkey kong, pac-man or galaga though.
-

yeah, but usually it's some random game I never heard of... didn't they just get some shmup that's suppose to be good working? in about the last 2 months?
-
I'll add a new version of MAME every 5 or 10 versions or so, add any new/improved/now-working roms that run on the new version, and keep the older versions of MAME and the roms that run on them. My base MAME is .119, and I use that for the vast majority of the games. I just use Mamewah to bring up the correct MAME version and the correct rom. There aren't that many games added these days that I'm particularly interested in, although everyone's got their own personal preferences.
-
I update with each full version.
It's less hassal that way, I point the torrent to my ROMs directory, pull down the changes and I get the latest and most accurate gameplay. Now-a-days it's too easy to stay on top of things(Assuming your system's networked), rather than try and slog through some massive update every couple years.
-
Once you're happy with a setup there should be no need. Enjoying retro games is not about waiting for 'new releases' like modern console fanboys and as all the true classics are now covered, who gives a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about an obscure Japanese mahjong title or so-so 3D game becoming available?

Still running a self-compiled variant of .36 with nags and warnings removed on one cabinet. I've passed that around as hackmame.exe to many folks around here.
Sadly, I've never succeeded in getting .36 to remove the nags and warnings. It was just too old. So for now I need to deal with them.
