Title: MAME Trackball Settings
Post by: methodical on February 18, 2011, 01:23:48 pm
Trackball tracks as a mouse perfectly in Windows, and the settings all seem correct but the Y Axis jumps around in game. X Axis works perfectly though. Something I'm missing?

Just one game (which one?) or all games? Which emulator? Which version of Windows?

Is it smooth in Windows?

I've had this issue caused by dirty optics.

Isn't that called "backspin" or something like that by having the setting too high? Seem to semi remember that from somewhere, could be wrong...

I would, as a test, play around with the two sensitivity variables: In windows, and then in MAME. I'd probably turn it down to where it feels pretty slow in Windows, and then see if the backspin still happens in MAME. Windows, of course, doesn't use the word "sensitivity", it uses the words "cursor speed", so be aware of that. If it still does jump around too much for your taste, turn down the Y sensitivity in MAME. Start with half, and then go from there. By default in MAME, most games are at 100, so try to set it to 50.

Oh, and tabbing back and forth between Windows and MAME can cause bad stuff to happen, too. Make sure to steer clear of that. If you are using MAMEUI and not playing games in full screen, there are many issues that can happen when both Windows and MAMEUI want to use the mouse.

Also what version of Windows are you using? I had problems with 95 that magically went away with XP. If lowering the settings doesn't help, make sure all the "windows" are on the encoder wheel, and the gut are clean.

What brand trackball is it?  Most new trackballs need to be "broken in" over time for the y axis.  In Windows, you don't really notice any jumps because you're moving the trackball slowly to navigate.  But in MAME you move it a lot faster which may cause issues during the break in period.
