Title: Cabinets available in MD
Post by: PacManFan on August 22, 2003, 09:51:43 am
FYI,

I just recently spoke with Larry from Capital Amusements in Rockville MD (301)762-8585. He told me that they have 3 nice cabinets they are going to get rid of soon. They cabinets go from 25 -50$, and they all have coin boxes, monitors, and control panels. I don't have they details about which games. Anyone interested in a nice cabinet for a fair price should call soon. Capital Amusements is open T,Th,Sat. from 8 -12. They will return calls on other days though.

Update,
I spoke with Larry again from Capital amusements. He said that all the old arcade cabs they have (a dozen or so) from Olney (thier second location)are getting brought to the dump by Friday. So if anyone is interested, give him a call.  Don't let all these machines go to waste! Call up and make him an offer!

Think you could find out what he's got?  It's a 400 mile hike for me, but I'd consider taking it if there's something decent.

Sorry, I can't, I'm having a hard enough time trying to convince my wife to get just 1 more machine in the house.

OK everyone, absolute last chance to save these cabinets!
This is the situation, Capital Amusements has been storing games in this old lady's basement for the past 10+ years, This lady is moving , and Capital needs to get rid of all the games, or transport them to thier warehouse. I just spoke with Larry from Capital, and I've arranged to meet him at:
18313 Dutchess drive
Olney, Md.
at 9:30 am on Saturday morning, If anyone wants an upright cabinet (possibly in working condition) for 25$-50$, come with a truck and pick one up!
After 9:30, the cabinets are going to go to the dump!

Please come and rescue a cabinet or 2 from certain death. You may even find a gem or 2.

-PacManFan.

Married/Child life sometimes suck.  I am willing, but not able.  It's my kids first birthday, and I can't drive the 12 hour round trip down there.

I'm going to try to get there myself. I have a trailer and a van. I could probably haul 4 at a time but not sure if I can afford 4 this week.

Great.... now I find a friend who doesn't mind me keeping the cab at his house.... no time to get someone to transport the cab...

I guess I shouldn't even bother trying to get one right now, I wont even start working on my cabinet for a long time :-/

Well..... :D.... It looks like were are going to have that MD get together sooner than we thought.  Atleast its for a good cause.... "Kill the Whales... Save the Cabinets!!"

PMF - Is there a count on the number of Cab they have out there.... Hate to have everyone showup and there not be enough cabs to go around....

WonderMellon - I would, except, I have plans to get rid of the kids this weekend, and my wife wants to tag along with me (since it will be just the 2 of us {insert song here})(.  With a small Ford Range, there isn't a hole lot of room.  Sorry.

Birdtales - HAHA !! You just got rid 3 cabs and you are itch'n for another...  If you do make it down, do you think you could bring the Qbert stuff with you, my brother won't be able to get the other cab, Mommy won't let him - no room..HAHA!! and I'm not sure when I can make another run down your way.  Thanks.

I definitely want to save one of these babies, but I don't have access to a truck (short of paying $70 to try and rent a u-Haul on a Saturday without a reservation, ha).  Would anybody be willing to rent me some space in their truck so I can save a cab?  I'm in Rockville off Randolph Road, about 15-20 minutes from the location in Olney, so I'm not that far out of the way for folks.

Can anyone help me out?  If so, PM me, or e-mail me at abrannan@yahoo.com, or even call tonight (301) 486-9678.  Thanks folks!

I just spoke with Steve from Captial Amusement, He says there are 8 partial cabinets (fairly complete , unknown working states), and a few empty cabinets at the Olney location. He also said that he has a bunch(Complete - working and broken) in his garage he is willing to part with if we take them all. He lives on Hathaway terrace (about 4-5 miles from Olney location). There is also the Capiatal Amusement warehouse full (30+) machines on SouthLawn in Rockville (5 miles from Olney). So I think there will be plenty of cabinets to go around.
Has anyone tried to fit a Cab in a Minivan before? That's what I'm working with. I think I might be able to fit one in the back if I remove the seats, and one on top(yeah right).
After we all get our cabinets, howabout doing a lunch or something nearby?

NightHawk,
One of the compromises for me showing up is that I take my daughter with me.  I am bringing the SUV in case I find something I want to keep, but I wouldn't mind driving down together in two vehicles.

On that note, what time is everyone showing up?  Even if I don't pick up a cab it would be nice to see everyone and at least get a chance to chat.

OK I'm definately in. I'm two hours away so making trips to my house is out but I maight be able to make a trip or two to others houses, I'm sure we can work out something. We may need someone to stand guard over the others till we get back.   :P

PMF - I have hauled many a cabinet in my Dodge Caravan. A normal sized cabinet (Asteroids, Defender, any classic) will fit fine and the door closes. Some of the newer JAMMA cabs of course will not.

Nighthawk- Actually I want 4 if the price is right! However now I have one Driving cab to take to the dump. :(  I'll bring the Qbert thingy.

Lunch sounds great. Let's do it!!!!!!!!! My 13yo son is coming with me.

Steve and Larry have both asked me to tell everyone to show up at 9:30am sharp.  I live very close by to Olney(~ 8 miles), I'll check and see with my wife if it's OK to have some people over for lunch and to play games on my cab. If my house is out of the question, there are a ton of places to eat, as well as a Dave and Busters at White Flint mall next to my house.

It's not going to be a problem of getting together... more a problem of   "Where the heck do we keep the cabs while we play (meaning at D&B or someplace else)...."  Also remember that they are calling for scattered thunder storms (doesn't mean it will rain, but there is still that possibility).  A tarp would work, but if the winds really kick up, might not hold long.  (Just tring to point out possible problems that might come up..)

HURRY ONLY 18 HRS LEFT TO MAKE THE FINALE PLAN !!!!!!!

Well, White Flint Mall has a multi-level garage, with some corners that only get cars during the holidy rush.  Park everybody there, and tip the security guy a $20 to keep an eye out while we're inside, or elsewhere.  Just an idea.

Just watned to say thanks again to everyone I met today at the little gathering.  FYI, I got those other two marquees off and found out that the cab I got was originally a Reactor cabinet.  From the looks of it, it's the original monitor, and the marquee that was under the other two is in really good shape.  Of course, that water damage is going to be a bear to repair.

Anyway, just wanted to say I had a blast, and I look forward to eeveryone getting to gether again sometime soon!

Hey everyone!
I had a great time today. FYI I got a Narc cabinet in fairly good condition. It started out as a Narc, then it was a Street Fighter, then a Mortal Combat. It's got everything in it except for the board. I need to test out the monitor though, It looks like it was a 19" joust monitor.
WonderMellon's brother Stirling took some pictures on his digital camera. I hope WonderMellon can post them soon.
After dropping off abrannan's cab at his house , we went to my house and played some games on my cab and stood around and talked for a while.
Thanks again everyone who came out and saved some old cabs. It wasn't quite the gems I had hoped for, but there was a few nice ones.

Man, i'm sorry i missed out.  Curse my job.  I wouldn't have been able to save a cab, but at least i coulda got together with some area members.  Hopefully we can organize something again soon so those of us who missed this time can partake.  Can't wait to see some pics.  Glad to hear it wasn't a total bust.  Congrats to those who got themselves a cab.

Hey, you didn't happen to get a shot of my cab (the mini/Reactor/big orange beast), did you?  I only ask because I've already done a lot of cleanup, and I realized a before shot would have been good.  No big deal if you don't have one.  My thanks either way.

I had a little buyer's remorse after getting my Narc cab, There was an old Galaga cab w/ no artwork that I let slip by. I think my next project is going to be to find and restore a Galaga to mint condition. There was also a nice Centipede cab that went to the dump that no one was interested in. :'(
I've stripped out my Narc cab (Harness, power supplies, coin door/box, monitor, etc..) to save and/or part off. I've got a guy (Greg) who's coming buy tonight to buy the empty cab from me for 55$. So I made out fairly well on the deal.

Here's a nice pic of Wondermellon playing my Lusid-style cab. (Note Emutron running onscreen)

Catchy little slogan.. ;D...

Too bad I couldn't have saved one of these cabs... (wife is all for building the cabs, just doesn't want any more Empty ones..)

I was thinking later that day that MAN !!! I really should have grabbed that Centipede cab.  Oh well, this was mainly a learning experience for me.  I wasn't even sure what to look for so,.... live and learn...

Sooo.... when's the next get together... I like Birdtales idea of a caravan to an auction...  How about D&B... bring the family thing.?
Title: Re:Cabinets available in MD
Post by: WonderMellon on September 03, 2003, 04:48:00 pm
I am allways up for a little get together.  D&B sounds like fun.  I also would like to be a part of the caravan to the auction in November at the Timonium fair grounds.

I debated the Galaga and Cetipede cabs as well, but for the condition that they were in I don't think it was worth it to try to restore to original condition.  The Galaga had some pretty severe water damage and the Centipede was extremely banged up as well.  While I am sure almost anything is restorable, those were just too far gone to be my first restoration project.  Birdtales has done considerably more work on cabs than I have and he came to the same conclusion.

I very much enjoyed the experience as I got to meet people in the area interested in the hobby and I got to see some old empty beat up cabs first hand.  Now I have a reference point at least when evaluating any cabs in the future.
