I've tried to 'convert' these video files to a 4:3 format, but even at an inverse resolution - they're at 352x480 - they come out blurry. Is there some easy way to do this?

Explain in a little more detail exactly what you are wanting to do. Do you mean you have a rotated video you wanted to un-rotate or do you mean the video is encoded in the wrong aspect? If it's encoded at the wrong aspect you might want to consider starting over, because you'll never get that lost resolution back.

The content was originally 4:3 TV broadcast (1986), but the source I found recently has them encoded in 3:4, so they're slightly squished.
