Ultimarc makes an Xbox adapter:

Or contact HarumaN in B/S/T or via PM. He does controller hacks for Xbox controllers:

thank you for the help

Also do a search for CoinOps. It does everything! From console games to arcade games.
-
or you could buy a couple of xbox joysticks from mad catz or hori and use those instead of hacking a controller.

This board connects directly to an xbox, ps3, pc as a gamepad or keyboard controller and an xbox 360 with pass thru wiring.

Instead of just giving you the easy answers like the others did it might be better for me to ask the hard questions.
What games are you wanting to play? Is the interface important? What about variety in terms of controls?
If you want to play anything newer than some of the smaller mid 90's games (think cps2 and SOME of the neogeo) then a classic xbox will work fine. If you want a nice front end, or the ability to hook something up other than a joystick and buttons then a mame box is NOT for you. The classic xbox's 64mb of memory makes for a poor mame box. Youa re also stuck with a fairly old version of mame, the interface isn't the greatest in the world ect... The only benefit in using a classic xbox is the cost, but keep in mind that you'll need to add the cost of getting it hard modded or soft modded (the cost of a game) in there. Without spending much more you could put a modest pc, 360 or ps3 in there, all of which will give you more bang for your buck.
Just something to thk about.

There is zero cost to soft mod an XBox. All you need is an audio CD.
