Title: Converting a horizontal cab to a vert; Easy?
Post by: goldenageofarcade on February 04, 2011, 01:07:38 pm
I have a Bad Dudes cabinet that was converted to some JAMMA game, and also another cabinet that was originally a Moon Patrol that was similarly converted.  I want to use one of them as a dedicated vertical MAME.  Is this as easy as unbolting the monitor and rotating it 90 degrees and bolting it back in?  Or are vertical monitor purpose-built?  Or do I have to gut the monitor and rotate it within the mounting on the monitor itself?

I realize I won't be able to use the existing bezel, but beyond buying a proper one, how hard is such an endeavor?

Oh, I should mention I'm terrified of monitors, so I'm very reluctant to handle the monitor itself except by it's frame.  If I have to do any surgery on the monitor itself, I'll likely put 60-in-1's in these cabs and sell them and keep an eye out for a vertical cabinet for this project.

Thanks very much,
Ryan

Pull out the chassis, rotate it 90 degrees, and slide it back in. It is now sandwich time..

The bad dudes is real easy to convert from horizontal to vertical.

remove the front plexi, bezel art and wooden piece that they sit on, remove the monitor and then unscrew the wood that the monitor was screwed into.
You can now turn that piece 90 degrees and bolt the monitor back in.

I am currently using a bad dudes cabinet for my vertical build. I had to do a little bit more though because I'm cramming in a 25" monitor

Most monitors can be used in either orientation.

Good luck

I think the Bad Dudes is the easier of the two. If its the cab style I'm thinking of the top is taller than the Williams.
Moon Patrol also has a shelf mount monitor, right? The way those are set up, you sometimes have to cut the shelf or the monitor will be obscured by the bottom of the marquee box when its flipped vertical.

The Bally cab I have is like this. I know even the standard 19" wouldn't fit vertically without lowering the monitor shelf.

damn english language...I think Cheffo is saying you should throw the old tube away, and just use an LCD instead, right Jeffo? ;)

I advice you to keep the chassis with components facing upwards. The heat of the caps should travel upwards and keep the monitor alive longer. If you have to build a shelf for the chassis so be it.

No -- I was referring to the fact that the chassis is just a circuit board and that it is the tube that needs to be rotated.

Can anyone substantiate this claim?

Isnt it suppose to keep the small woodland creatures warm while running in the wheel?  ;)

That's only if you're running Windows Vista.

That is what I originally meant, I just failed at making a joke about it.
