Title: suggested coin door that will fit?
Post by: pmc on August 20, 2003, 12:32:34 pm: I built a Defender cabinet and always expected to use a stainless steel Williams coin door. I even bid on a few of them on eBay. Well, in the end, I installed a keyboard tray and door that sits in the usual position. That reduces my space for a coin door to 12-1/4" from the bottom of the piano hinge on the keyboard door to the bottom of the coin-door panel.

Will a Williams door fit? My gut sense says "no". Suggestions for an alternative? I like the look of some of the small one-slot vertical doors. They seem like they are only 9-10" tall and not too bad looking. Other suggestions?

This cab is almost done. Working in art now. I'll have to get a digi-camera to post some pics. I couldn't have (and actually wouldn't have) done it without this site and you folks.

I sold my last 1/2 over/under, but I've got another I'm almost done with. However, it won't fit in a Defender door I don't believe.

I THINK I might have a stainless Williams door. I've got quite a few regular Williams door, but will have to check to see if there's one. Have a pic for reference?

I sold my last 1/2 over/under, but I've got another I'm almost done with. However, it won't fit in a Defender door I don't believe.

I don't have a picture of my exact cabinet for your reference, but here's what it looks like (I bult it to exactly the same dimensions):

See how the coin door is shifted most of the way up to the top of the panel? Well, mine has a 1-inch spacer below the control panel, then a 3.5" (or so) keyboard drawer door, then the 1/8" butt of the piano hinge, and then 12.25" of open space until the bottom of that panel. So what would be ideal is something maybe 8.25-10.25" tall so that it fits with a 1" to 2" margin on the top and bottom. The panel is 24.5" wide if that helps.

Kinda painted myself into the corner with that keyboard drawer methinks... :-\

If those are you dimensions, I think you could use a standard Williams style door. Hold on, I'll try to find a pic...

That should do it, I think. If memory serves, they're only a little more than 10" high. I'll have to measure to be sure.

It sure looks too big, but it's hard to tell from pictures. I watch eBay for stainless doors and they come through pretty regulalrly. But no one ever mentions the size. Interestingly, I grew up not far from Art Mallet in NY. Perhaps that's another option for me.

If you get a chance, I'd love it if you could measure for me. I'll grab a tape measure for the next time I go into an arcade (which is once every 5 years now a days) and if I can find a Williams door....

I like the stainless steel look better than the black doors... but I'm sure they'll be harder to restore and make look new.

Not anymore, it's not. Last trip out there, I got all the doors he had.

Williams doors measure 13 1/4" x 11 1/2" or so. Inner measurements (where the door goes into the cab) are about 1" smaller each side.

Looks like I'll have a fairly easy installation and a visible 3/4" of spare space on the front (3/8 of space on the top and bottom respectively). It might look too tight but it'll fit.

I measured a few doors over the weekend. I found one on a Pac Man machine (I'm not sure, but I don't think it was original) that was about 11" tall. I thought it looked pretty good. I definitely like the look of the wider doors over the narrow tall ones.

Hmmmmm..... my keyboard tray door has to flip open all the way for the keyboard drawer to come out (180-degrees). I hope the coin door does not interfere with that.

Thanks for the measurements. I really needed that data to be confident in a purchase.

Looks like perfect measurements for me (it's a tiny bit smaller than the original given your measurements) and it's a good looking door.

I got outbid on another stainless door, so I'm still keeping options open... ;)

Besides, many of the stainless doors don't come with trim so I dunno how they'll look in the end...
