Title: Interested in Custom Laser Envraving for your cab?
Post by: nipsmg on March 19, 2002, 06:49:26 pm
We currently have, in my house, (for another project my father is working on), an $30,000 laser engraver.  This thing can carve both vector and raster graphics into wood, glass (looks like etching/sandblasting), plastic, etc.

My father was looking for other possible applications for it, and I came up with this.. I know a lot of people would like that "personal" touch on their cabs.

The bed is wide.. VERY wide.. I want to say almost 4 feet wide, I may be off either way on that measurement (I'm not home, so I can't measure.. I'll post measurements later), however the front and back door of the engraver open so length of materal to be engraved is not really an issue.. however, LARGE engravings (Like an entire control panel full of designs) won't be done.. It'll take too long and it overkill on the laser.

This isn't definite, I'm just looking to see if there's enough interest to start up something like this.

I'll be checking the thread so just reply with any questions, comments, concerns you have.

Thanks!

I'll engrave something and put up a screenshot when I get home.

As far as costs, it hasn't been decided on yet, however, there will be a very minimal charge on top of material costs, unless there's graphical cleanup on any images that'll be required..

If enough people show interest after I put up and example, I'll decide more on if it's actually worth it..

hey, that's a very cool thing.

i think that a good idea for this would be to etch the couple-inch border of a monitor glass!  maybe with a few vid characters down/across each edge?

i'd get that if it weren't too pricey =0)

cheers
dave

I have some Lexan here I'm going to try the engraver out on..  Instead of hitting it with the laser at high power, it might work either setting it lower, or setting it to a very low setting and making multiple passes at it..

I know it works well with glass and acrylic...
Does some cool stuff with wood and plastic too.

I am going to carve the MAME logo and possibly some video game characters into wood today, and get some pictures up for everyone.  If I get a chance to do the lexan today too, I'll post that..

Basically, as far as pricing goes... the bigger or more intricate the design, the higher the price, however, it's going to be VERY reasonable (I hope to have a pricing table up by tomorrow)..

Vector art will be less expensive than raster art, etc.

Examples will be up later today  :)

i am going to try something like this out with a dremel tool. its supposed to be really nice for etching glass, so i hope it would work as well on lexan. i am not sure how it will look so im gonna test it out. this wont be for a little bit though, im not up to that part. ill post some pictures if/when i do though. i think a large etching of the fighters from marvel, capcom, etc, would look really cool. though it would probably take forever  :-/

Sorry about not posting the pics last night.. We had some fun experimenting w/ plexi last night.. it came out REALLY WELL, I was impressed.. However, just as we were finishing I had to run out to meet my Girlfriend st a movie... so I didn't get a chance to post pics..

I'll be home within 2 hours and post them then.

Sorry for anyone who was waiting  :o
