Title: PS3 Down.... already!
Post by: DaveMMR on January 25, 2011, 11:05:10 pm
Okay, got my PS3 in December and have been enjoying it.   Suddenly, we're siting down enjoying The Social Network on BluRay and it freezes halfway through.   Soon thereafter, the system will refuse to read any disc.   I tried things I've read on the internet (reformatting drive, deleting certain files, etc.) but to no avail.

Fortunately, Sony's taking care of the repair or replacement (waiting on the shipping box) but it's a bummer that it up-and-died so soon.   Now I have to keep myself busy with the Wii and Steam.

Anyone else have this issue?  Is this a common problem with the PS3?  Do I get to look forward to having the same problem again in the future?

Sounds like the laser died on the drive...  Sony has always had issues ever since the PS1 with lasers dying in their consoles.  The PS2 was worse, but we are starting to see it more and more with the PS3.

I hear 40gb fat ps3s had crappy bluray drives. guessing you had that?

I had my slim for a couple of months now. no problem whatsoever and I play games all the time. BRD in my 40gb fatty die after about a year though.

I have a fat 60Gb system, no issues.  It's a launch machine.  Get's used frequently for watching blu-rays, streaming Netflix, playing games, etc.

same here. I cant wait for it to break now, threads like this are becoming more and more common. I wonder if Sony will drop a billion dollars to fix them all for free?

I've had my fat 40gig for 3 years with zero issues.

I also have a friend with a slim he bought a year ago that went YLOD a couple months back.

... sometimes you just get a bad one?  At least it's not a pre-slim xbox360? :)

Actually my PS3 was a brand-new 160GB slim.  That's why it took me by surprise.

I'm not going to run around screaming "Sony SUX" just yet as I'm just chalking it up to either (a) random defect that happens occasionally or (b) maybe UPS dropping the package the wrong way when shipping (I definitely treated the console with extreme care).  My other Playstations (1, 2, P) are still kicking with only minor maintenance here and there.

I got my shipping box today with instructions.  Hopefully I won't be down too long.

I got my 250g slim for Christmas brand new, and I havent had any problems yet. Im kinda getting worried though, I didnt notice how much dust built up on it til yesterday. I cleaned it off, but man, there was a lot.

Thats weird you mentioned the PS2's had an issue with the lasers. I have had mine since launch, and it gets played pretty damn often. It has a lot of miles on it too. I just fired up GoW 1/2 on it, and bam. Works great. Except it looks like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on a HD TV  :lol

I didn't have any major problems with the PS2 either - just cracked it open, adjusted the lens and dusted it a bit.   It reads discs consistently now whereas before, it'd sometimes be a little picky.

And you've hit upon why I just keep the PS2 on the CRT in the bedroom (along with the NES, Genesis, et al).  ;D
