Title: Beer Pong Table Project
Post by: roberts123 on January 25, 2011, 12:06:10 am
Hello,
Well I have decided to make myself a little gift for next school year. I have some ideas that I have thought about for a while. I'm going to make myself a beer pong table. It gets old trying to find a table big enough to use every time I want to play a game of pong. Right now I am using a door with the handle off. It's a little depressing when you have a touch screen jukebox an arcade machine and another jukebox in your party room and you have a door as your table. :embarassed: So i have decided how about I make a pong table that goes along with my room. Right now i have an idea for the table to put beer bottle caps under the glass. But every one does that so I'm thinking having so led lights and using the CNC machine to make this a pong table wroth playing on. Please let me know of any other ideas that could be useful and or just sweet to have on this table. I'm going for an OSU theme. Thank you I will be sure to include pictures. The first picture is one of a table with the caps under the glass.

There is many rules to this game in certain situations. But here is the main part of the game. I play with 10 cups You then line them up in a triangle (4 in back, 3 next row, 2 next row, 1 final row) on each end of the table. You fill the cups about 1/4 of the way with your favorite type of drink doesn't have to be beer. Then you and one other person (your partner) gather on one side of the table then two others get on the other side be hide the triangle of cups (your cups). The point to this game is to try and throw ping pong balls into the other teams cups so they drink it. The first team out of cups loses.

I have been looking up tables on youtube. And I have found two things that i have pretty much fell in love with that I must have on my table. First is cup sensors and the second is an auto ball cleaning system because having a water cup could end up being pretty messy. Cup sensors is just a sensor inside the cup that when you put it on top of an led sensor on the table it lights up to tell you what cups are in play. The auto ball wash is just what it sounds like it washes your balls for you.  Another idea I have came up with is having cup holders on the side of the table so you can get the already used cups off of the playing surface. Tell me what you think.

Never played beer pong, played a similar game called quarter shots, where you had to bounce a quarter into a shot glass full of whiskey.
If you missed, you had to drink the shot, if you hit it, you could pick either of the players to drink it.
Of course there was always one player that every one picked on, until he passed out.

Good to see a fellow buckeye.  I'll be interested to see how the table comes out.

I got winner!

That is NOT Beer Pong.  ;D  That game is called Beruit.  Beer Pong is played on a large table with ping-pong paddles.  One cup of beer on positioned dead center a paddle's length from the back edge on each side (or in from the edge on both sides if playing doubles).  You hit a ping pong ball over the net with the object being to try and get the ball in the other player's cup.  If it goes in you chug an entire cup of beer.  If it hits the cup at all and you don't "save" it (by returning the ball on one bounce in bounds across the net) you have to drink 1/4 of the beer.  Scoring goes 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.0, etc. until someone reaches 11, 15 or 21 points.  You get super drunk and games take a while but there isn't a better drinking game around if you have the room.  Back in college pretty much everyone in my fraternity could hit the cup at least on about 1 in 3 tries.... ahhhh.... college....

Cool sounding project though - can't wait to see your table!

The first time I've seen that game was in the movie Beer fest.  As a recent grad of OSU, beer pong has always been the game described by roberts.  Maybe it's different in different states, but I've never played or seen anyone play your version of beer pong at OSU.

...However it seems like a fun game  :)

jav's right. Beruit gets mixed up with the Beer-Pong name due to the use of ping-pong ball. That and the "pro beer-pong" league advertises it as Beer Pong, since it's more accessible of a name than Beruit is to Americans.
Though, it's funny, their how-to-play site (http://www.bpong.com/vault/general-beer-pong-rules) states the game as being Beer-Pong/Beruit. I guess they know the name isn't entirely accurate.

Are you going for an official sized table (8 feet long - 2 feet wide)?  Is it going to be fold-able/store-able?

Due to the room I have I am going to have to make it a little shorter then official size. I am going 70 x 30. :-[ But I figure it has to be better then a door as my table. And I have never heard of "Beer-Pong" as Beruit but thats a nice fun fact. But it will not be a fold away because of everything that i will have going on with this table. Put I have gotten some PVC pipe from the store and I am starting to find out how to make the auto ball cleaner. I think I am going to make it right beside the cups on either side so I will still have room to play beer ball.  :lol

One major flaw in my auto ball cleaner. I will be drilling holes into the the table top about 1 1/2" to go down into a pipe about 1 1/4" to fit the ball. The ball will go down one side and come out the other side after going through water while under the table top. The problem is going to be having enough air pressure for the ball to go down through the water and up the next side. I am trying to make it as quiet as possible i was thinking of using some computer fans but I don't think that will give me enough pressure to get through the water and back up. Thank you.

There was a Mythbusters episode that raised a sunken boat by pumping ping pong balls under water. They used a funnel that swirled water to get the ping pong balls into the boat.

Here is my idea for the ball cleaner. My google sketchup isn't the best work but it should give you an idea of what I'm thinking about. The problem still is that I'm not able to move the ball down over and up. I just don't know what would be quiet and strong enough. I tried using a computer fan and hooking it up to a power supple just to see if it would be able to push the ball up. The way i tired was hooking it all up and then holding a glass over the top of it with the ping pong ball in it.  :banghead:

Where on the table would that be and would the water stay clean?  From my experience of playing, some beer usually ends up getting on the table and could get moved around/in to it.  Cool Idea and I would love to see it work.

I plan on building on a little lip to protect that from happening. This is what I plan on using as the ball washer. It is a pretty famous toy that runs on back pressure to shot the ball up. There will be a little stopper to stop the ball from shooting the ball up into the air. I also plan to drill a drain hole in the bottom pipe so it will be easy to drain. I also believe I will make it work with the press of a button. I was thinking of taking an arcade button and instead of the button top place a beer cap on it. The only reason I will make this work by the press of a button is because the table will be used as more then just a beer pong table.

College kids would die if they came into a party and the pong table was setup with THAT as the automatic ball washer.  Odd?  Absolutely.  But awesome?  Quite.

Can't wait to see what the hell the finished product looks like!  :applaud:

Beer pong is a game where you play ping pong with glasses of beer on the table.  Beirut is the game where people throw ping pong balls at each other's glasses.

here is a link to a coo Beirut table:

I went to Wal-mart and found the toy for about $20 and figured I might as well give it a shot. Well I didn't really think about it being a battery operated system till after I got it. But after I did some research and took it apart, I decided to try and hook it up to a power source. After a little work I was able to get it to work. This is just a simply set up to see if it will work. I still have to come up with a better way for the entry and the return for it but it will work.  :applaud:

Not to side track this thread, but when we have parties at our shop, we have 3 beer pong tables ready to use. They almost always get used as flip cup tables instead. More people get involved, and frankly get drunk faster. javascript:void(0);
Just a thought.

good luck with your project i could see a lot of fun adding LED and lighting up when the ball bounces on a square or what not.  and you could add a extra shot if you get a red light or something..

we did not have beer pong when i was young and dumb.  we played .25, and threeman. a dice game.  and you did not want to be three man for to many rounds or you were needing a wheel chair to get to your bed :D

have fun while ya young :)

I do plan on still being able to play flip cup and other games with this table. I picture this as basically a "mame" machine just instead of having arcade games there will be beer and instead of a cabinet it will be a table. All of the big games that I play, I have already figured out a way to play on this table. The top of the table will be completely level for flip cup. I plan on having a ball holder for the ping pong balls to hold then while I'm not playing. Cup holders to keep the cups/beers off the table while you play.

a buddy of mine did his bartop like that and used shellac to encapsulate the whole top, it turned out beautiful.  was a really durable finish, completely watertight and looked like the whole thing was dipped in glass.

Quick question for anyone who can answer it. I have been thinking about the ball cleaner and I have began to think that I would like to press the button once and let the ball cleaner run for anywhere between 5-10 seconds. Would anybody have any idea how to make this happen. It will just be a motor hooked up to a micro switch and a regular button. Also I am going to include a place to store extra ping-pong balls and a slot for some cards. But any other ideas that I could include on this table to make it the ultimate beer drinking table. Thank You.

You need a beer dispensing device.  Stop obsessing about how clean your balls are and focus on the most important aspect: the delivering of alchohol

Due to the fact that I am attending Ohio State and will be making a kegerator this summer. I really don't need a way to deliver the alcohol to everybody that wants a beer. I believe that with this table already I will have enough people around it as I want. I don't feel the need to draw more attention to my table while a game is going on to crowded no elbow room=bad throw. That and I believe that beer out of a keg taste way better then out of a can/glass so why waste the good beer on a game of pong. Makes no sense since I will not always be playing on the table.

If you're putting water in the ball cleaner, make sure you clean that thing regularly with disinfectant. You don't want your entire party to come down with legionella, cholera or dyssentary!  ;D

So I have been working on this project some. But mostly the boring parts of planing, cutting, and jonting the boards together but so far I have V-Carved on the CNC machine out the board for flip cup. Here are some pictures of it so far  have stained and I'm about ready to paint the Block O's and the Buckeye Leaf.

Why not attach the button for the ball cleaner to the power supply, then drop the ball in and hold the button until it's clean?

Since that board will be under the glass I am gong to stain and then use a clear coat sealant on it so I will be able to paint the Block O and the Buckeye leaf. Tonight I am gong to make a run to a paint store to get some nice paint. My friend told me to use sparkly paint but I don't know. What would be the best idea for the paint job to make the symbols stick out??

A darker stain will definitely stand out against a light stain. I like the color of red mahogany stain...I used it to stain this desk: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=109035.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=109035.0)

But then again, a darker stain may have some "bleed through" around the edges.

I just might have to do that. The refinishing job you did looked great and the color is very nice. I'm sure that t would look great and stand out against the golden oak stain I used. I might just cut out another O and leaf and try it just to make sure I like it.

Don't worry I have been working just not to much on the table. :-[ But i have had the chance to get the sides all done. The next thing to do get the glass for the top of the table. This is what it is looking like so far. After the glass I am going to make the legs. There will be two set one set will be legs like on a regular coffee table the next set will be for the games. I really like the paint.
