Title: Can you replace this part of a monitor?
Post by: tmasman on August 19, 2003, 04:12:50 pm
I got this machine at an auction, but the "bulb" at the rear of the monitor was broken. Can this part (or even the whole "yolk") be replaced or fixed easily (read cheap).

Thanks!

Nope.

It can be fixed, but it won't be cheap or easy (or worth it).  I'm afraid that what you have there is a big chunk of leaded glass and phosphor.  :(

Don't just toss the entire monitor out. Pull the boards out of it. You can sell those to help finance a complete monitor.

Unless you know under what conditions that end broke off, those boards could be junk.

If that thing was under power when it was broken, a lot more could have died.

*EDIT*

BTW, many times the end of the tube is intentionally broken off by service guys on junk monitors to prevent accidental implosion.  Hopefully that's not the case with this one.  :-\

It looked like a fresh break...
Like it might have gotten broken getting moved to (or in) the auction. The piece was sitting right inside the cabinet, and there was no back door to protect it.

I'm kinda hoping the chassis is still good.

Was that the monitor from the Nintendo cabinet or the one right next it at the auction?

The one right next to it...
The Devastators cab w/ the broken CP that kept falling into the cab. (But it did have 2 Wico Balltops on the CP. ;D)

It has a little burn-in, but I figured it would be cool to play around with if I could get it working. There's another thread talking about using TVs for arcade monitors that I started that has some ideas I'm thinking of trying out... (Swapping the tube from a TV to the chassis type stuff...)

I don't know... It probably won't be worth the hastle in the end, I'm just running through some ideas right now.

Well if all you wanted was the joys you should have told me. I had spares!  :)

No... The joys being Wicos was just a bonus...
I really just wanted the cabinet to Mame.
