Both of my PS3s (both original 60GB units) chose to die via RLOD within 24 hours of each other after nearly four years of perfect service. Needless to say I was disappointed.
After re-seating the hard drives, blowing out dust, letting them cool off (all the easy recommendations) I decided to go for broke and get a heat gun and thermal paste and heat me up some reality synthesizers.
I followed these instructions that I found on YouTube: PS3 YLOD Fix Part 1 of 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU#ws)
After a few hours I had (surprisingly) both PS3s up and running fine! I was very skeptical about the process, but it worked perfectly. It's only been a week, and who knows how long the fix will last, but so far, so good.
Anyone else had to do this?

I did it with my 60GB Fat.
Didn't get a perfect job tho'
Got the machine working again, so I could get me data off the drive (500GB drive!), the whole XMB parts work fine. But networking is down and if I try and start a game it locks up with a black screen. I probably have an issue with the solder on the RSX. When I get time I'll have to have another go at it.

This is news. Do the newer skinny models suffer from this?
That's funny... "Bad things happen when people try to tinker with electronics while they're plugged in...."
In High School I was part of an apprentice* program where I was explicitly told to leave the PC plugged in while working on it to ensure the system was grounded.
*I use the term "apprentice" very loosely. The whole program was a crock. Told them to ---fudgesicle--- off and left it after a week.
