I'm wondering if it is possible to have character moves, finishing moves, etc come up on the screen in game for games like Mortal Kombat rather than have a 50 page printout to sift through if I need to find a move.
If not, is there anything remotely close to this available?
I'm running MAME .140 through Mala.
Sadly, I don't know how to write code or anything so creating a program for it myself is a no go.

http://home.comcast.net/~plotor/command.html (http://home.comcast.net/~plotor/command.html)
Doesn't work with the official mame builds.
I'm not sure what other variations it still works with (MAMEUI, MAME32, etc)
I've used it with MAMEPlus v1.40 and it still works.
-
So it will NOT work with .140?

well, maybe you can use Johnny5?
-
You can also just read them.....
The DAT file is plain text and readable in a text editor.
Put them in Indesign, auto format them to 320x240 pixel pages and export all to PNG and add them to your screenshot folder.

I don't know of any way to display the moves while you are actually playing the game, if that is what you are asking. I think there is a way in gameex to have the controls pop up when you pause the game, I am not sure though...

Display on pause would work too, but I don't run gameex. :(

I believe Johnny5 and CPWizard can both display without sending pause to MAME/other software.
Also, MAME artwork system can indepently display the moves as they were on the original cabs/kits, if using a high-res display.

I downloaded CPWizard & tried messing with it a bit, but I have no idea how to get it to work. :-X

There might be a way to display moves on the bezel...
-
yes the bezel... that could done with the Artwork files in MAME if you are using screeenspace as the bezel, or added clever projection systems /LCDs if not
-
You could request that there be an entry in the in-game TAB menu called 'history'. There's already a dat file for that, so I'm betting it would be a simple operation to include that in baseline MAME.
