Title: Start game/Coin In controls not working
Post by: MagicManPA on January 12, 2011, 09:40:06 pm
I set my start button via the "controllers" tab & it does not register. I can still only start a game via 1 on my keyboard & insert coin via 9 on the keyboard.

Everything seems to work fine when I'm actually in a game, but I can't start a game via the CP. Still only via keyboard...

did you try setting it without the key board? as in get to the menu while using the control panel? EX, Shift left is menu, shift right is enter and then sign by pressing button

I set the controls in the menu for the joysticks & cp buttons, but the start button will not work to start a game

I am confused by what you mean.  Are you referring to these settings within Mala, or within MAME?   The reason I ask is, there is no "insert coin" button in Mala.  That would be a setting specific to MAME.

Are you asking about your controls once you are already in a game?   Like the Player 1 Start button and the Player 1 Coin button?   If so, these are keys that you need to configure if MAME and not Mala.

The settings in MALA. The button I set as "start" in MALA doesn't start any games for me.

MALA works to select & open a game from my gamelist. Once the beginning screens come up, the button I set as "start" will not start a game. I have to set this in MAME?

I'm still a little confused, but from what you said above it sounds like MALA is working like it should. When you say "Once the beginning screens come up," do you mean the beginning screens of the game? If so, MALA has already done its job at that point and it sounds like you need to go into the MAME settings (hit Tab) and set the player start buttons to whatever buttons you want to use to start the game. Sounds like maybe you're confusing MALA's settings with MAME's settings, when the two are actually separate.

Apparently I did mix them up. I'll look in MAME for setting my CP buttons to start games instead of the keyboard.

+1, exactly.   If the game starts and launchs from Mala, then Mala is out of the picture.

Okay, in that case what you want to do is:

You can also change settings per-game by going to Input: This Game, but for something like the start buttons you'll want to do it in Input: General so that it will be a global setting for all games.

Awesome, thanks.

Okay, in that case what you want to do is:

  • once you're in a game, press Tab to bring up the MAME menu
  • select Input: General
  • scroll to the input you want to change (for example, P1 Start), press Enter
  • press the button that you want to set to this function

You can also change settings per-game by going to Input: This Game, but for something like the start buttons you'll want to do it in Input: General so that it will be a global setting for all games.
