Title: Plz help, just got into the hobby. Power Supply Question

I bought a working Neo Geo last month off of Craigslist and my son and i have fallen in love with arcade games now.  We bought a cabinet off of Craigslist yesterday for 140.00 that has never even been used.  You can see the tape residue from the packaging.  Im using my neo geo as reference.  My first question is about power supply.  Can I use a switchable power supply for the monitor or does it have to be the complicated looking stuff in the bottom of my neo geo cabinet.  transformers etc...?  THANKS IN ADVANCE

HERE IS WHATS IN MY NEO GEO CABINET AND YES IM AWARE THAT IT WAS A CONVERSION AND NOT ORIGINAL.

Well in your new cabinet there isn't even a chassis hooked up to the existing monitor, it cannot work without one.

Most monitors are going to just want AC power from a main line, and won't require a switching power supply. The only real concern most of the time is if they require an isolation transformer (this protects the rest of the cab from the high voltages created by the monitor chassis). Since you don't even have a chassis in your new cabinet, you can buy a 'universal' chassis that won't require one.

Either that or just replace the monitor outright with a TV or LCD monitor. Personally I prefer arcade monitors, but this is purely a matter of taste and convenience.

Thanks for your response, i found a guy here in houston that will sell me a rebuilt 19 inch replacement monitor with chassis for 80.00.  I think im gonna go that route.  I really wish i could get away from all the confusing electrical wiring and make it more simple and clean.  Im not really wanting to go lcd because i want the original look.  Im gonna buy a xxxx in 1 board which would give me both options but i would most likely have to modify my cabinet to fit an lcd?

Depends on the xxxx in one board as to what kind of monitor it would hook up to. The 19" is probably the way to go.

As for getting away from the wiring; it's probably best just to start learning what it all is. When you go with something like the jamma connector it's going to simply the wiring to a certain degree, but in the end everything still has to be hooked up somewhere.
