Title: laminating over melamine?
Post by: cky4987 on January 04, 2011, 01:08:34 am
I was wondering if it was possible to laminate over melamine. I know not much sticks well to melamine, but maybe if I sanded it to rough it up it and used some contact cement it would hold. Has anyone ever tried this. If so how were your results? Thanks.

I haven't actually tried this, but I think this should work flawlessly. If you've ever sanded melamine, you'll have found that it loses its shine and its slick feel. I'm almost a 100% positive the contact cement will stick to it when sanded thoroughly.

I think I'm gonna give it a shot. What grit sandpaper do you think I should use?

I've done this with control panels, just rough it up real well. I don't know about contact cement, seems like i'd be hard to apply evenly.

Honestly, I think it will stick with just being roughed up. I'd guess a 150-200 grit??? If you do run into trouble try 3m sticky spray--it's a lot easier to get on evenly.

Oh, and don't use the cheap Walmart generic sticky spray.
