Title: Christmas arrived in a box this morning
Post by: Silas (son of Silas) on December 24, 2010, 08:26:58 am
The significance of this will probably be lost to the huge number of you who live on the other side of the pond to me, but just when I thought the postal delays in my village and surrounding countryside were going to destroy Christmas for me, the one thing I had been hoping would be delivered before the big day finally arrived just in the nick of time.

Christmas just isn't Christmas without................       24 cans of Root Beer  :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: Woohoo!

God how I have missed this stuff.  Thank heavens for http://www.americansoda.co.uk (http://www.americansoda.co.uk)

I love root beer (and beer too, of course).  Each of the ones on your link are good.  Have you had Sprecher's?

There are so many things that you can't get in England that I miss terribly from my younger days:

A&W Cream Soda
Pearson Coffee Nips
Reeses Pieces
Anything Hershey
Green Mountain Coffee
Breakfast in Friendlys/Denny's/IHOP/Perkins
Sliders (mini burgers) - But I'm vegetarian now so these are out anyway, as are corn dogs and jerky, also not available in England
Whoppers
Mr. Goodbar

I could go on.. It's all very sad.

The poor man's Mountain Dew is still available. The Fudrucker's in our area recently switched from Pepsi to Coca Cola and I had to make dew with Mellow Yellow instead.

Nope.

You can't actually get ANY root beer in England easily/cheaply.

You can get various brands of crap that are called root beer but are terrible. Sainsbury's sells Carters which is foul and tastes of artificial sweetener. Various places sell Bundaberg from Australia, which calls itself root beer. Whilst being a nice drink ...root beer it isn't.

In the 80's Mc Donalds sold it, but stopped due to lack of demand. IBC was available in the 90's for a while, but was withdrawn.

For root beer junkies, the closest we can get to a fix is Euthymol smokers toothpaste (I am not a smoker, so finding this was a miracle) which tastes quite like Barq's.

No, its been around and hasnt gone anywhere.  In fact in the past year or two the launched a whole new marketing campaign for it.

You live in Europe and you miss Hershey's??????  Hershey's "chocolate" contains less than 5% cocoa.  I'm not kidding.  You have such an abundance of wonderful chocolate everywhere you go there (at least on the continent . . . I've never been to England, but I can't imagine it's much different on the chocolate front considering it's part of the EU).

Being in America I miss a lot of European goods, particularly French stuff, but I've been dying without a certain danish salt licorice for the past couple years.  I recently have had news that I might get another sample of that soon.  My fingers are crossed!

What the hell? It looks like Tonsillolith on French* Fries.  :puke

*Since I'm American, am I still required to use freedom instead?

In Asia, they don't really have root beer either, they drink Sarsaparilla. Its just not the same....

Also, that poutine sounds awesome. I love chili cheese fries, and this sounds like a cousin of the dish. I can get good fries and cheese curds, but I'm a little foggy still on what kind of sauce to use. It sounds like there are a wide variety of acceptable sauces... Being American, I would just go with BBQ sauce, but I'm sure that is committing poutine blasphemy. Can anyone tell me a good sauce to buy/make for a first time trying poutine?

Also, are the cheese curds heated or room temp?

I was just about to "chime in" in regards to Hersheys one of the most awful chocolates ever.

I'm going to have to be disagreeable with as many people as possible in this thread...  Pepsi (cola in general) is nasty.  Rootbeer is the greatest (other than Market Basket store brand).  Hershey's is most definitely the best plain chocolate bar.  Poutine looks like just about the most disgusting thing anyone has ever eaten!  I've never had it of course and I'm sure it's probably pretty good but I wouldn't eat it on looks alone!

Albertan...

I LOVE poutine, with a nice cold glass of coca cola (not pepsi). I prefer reese's peanut butter cups over reese's pieces or any chocolate (hershey, cadbury, whatever)...

Oh yeah, that stuff is great. Last summer I picked up some DR Pepper throwback to try. Very good. I try not to drink Soda very much but when I do I prefer real sugar.
