Title: PC power switch outside cab?
Post by: MagicManPA on December 23, 2010, 11:37:05 am
I want to go 1 of 2 routes...

#1 - Does anyone sell a premade power switch & 2 pin cable assembly about 6' long?

#2 - Saw a link in a thread here before (Can't find it now) w/a switch operated by turning a key. Anyone have that link? I'd wire that to my MB. Also, anyone know where to buy pre-crimped 2 pin connectors. If it had a 6' or so cable already installed it'd be even better.

I just chopped the power switch mobo connector out of an old PC case, then used butt splices to extend the wire to the length I needed. You can use whatever type of momentary switch you want - I just used a plain old Happ button w/ microswitch. If you don't have an old PC case to steal the connector from, you could pick up something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Power-Motherboard-Cable-Switch-Button/dp/B00345WH4A).

That was 1 of the routes I listed. However, I was hoping someone sold one w/a longer cable as that's not long enough.

If you just want a PC switch prewired to a 2 pin connector and don't care that I hacked it together I'll send one to you.  I guess it has to go parcel post so just pay for the shipping.  I have the extra parts laying around and I'll wire it up for you.
6 feet long?  You don't care about the color of the wires, do you?

Just a guess, but I'm betting you won't find one of these with 6' of wire attached, since they're made to use inside computer cases and you generally don't need more than maybe a foot of wire.

But if you have wire, a crimper, and a couple butt splices, you can make it whatever length you need.

I think this (http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=462) is that key switch you were looking for. Either way, I think you're gonna need to break out the crimper.  ;D

I don't care what color they are.

That's the switch, thanks.

Where can I buy precrimped 2 pin connectors?

I searched the net for "motherboard header connector" and got a lot of hits.
But couldnt nail down exactly what you want. here is the closest I could find, and Im not 100% sure it is what you need:

Does the PC case have one of those small speakers in it? If so, see if the connector on it will fit what you need, if it does, just cut the wires next to the speaker, splice a length of speaker (or "zip") wire you need into it to reach your button, tape it good, then plug it into your power switch board, add a push button on the other end of the extended wires and you are good to go.
If this dont work, ask your friends if they have any old PC cases laying around, just get you a header plug out of it (usually HDD led, or pwr or rst switch.)
If all else fails, I probably have one in my junk box, pm me and I will give it to you.
NOTE: It's always a good thing to have a junk box full of computer parts from 10 years ago, until the wife finally gets fed up.

This might seam obvious, but I'll mention it for anyone who comes back and reads this thread in the future. Make sure you don't try to ground your switch with the "ground" from your interface card (i.e. IPAC). I prefer to call the ground on these cards a common wire, and not a ground, just to avoid such confusion. I've seen someone do this on a old Dell, as the power pins are hard to reach.

Never seen that before. Nice, but not long enough. If I find out where to buy the 2 pin header connectors I will wire 1 up or I may just buy the Sharkoon remote switch.

You really don't have any old PCs with connectors in them to pillage? Disconnect the hard drive led, hack off the end, and wire that into some long bit of wire. If it's going to be in a cabinet, who cares when the hard drive is being accessed.

We all don't have old PCs laying around. ;)

I should have spaced out that response more clearly.

I was referring to the existing HD/Power LED in your computer. The first part was more rhetorical. Sorry for the confusion.

you may want to check with a local pc repair shop..more often than not they will have old pc cases or parts lying around and would probably give it to you for free, or really cheap...then just splice in a piece of wire the desired length and attach it to a standard pushbutton

Glad you got it.
Since my project is on hold until I get my minipac issues resolved I was going nuts trying to find stuff to do to keep myself motivated.
Good luck!
