Title: Where did your alias come from?
Post by: Nannuu on August 17, 2003, 03:35:09 am
I was just wondering where people have come up the the alias they are using.

Mine?  It is not from Mork and Mindy.  It is in fact from the movie The World's Greatest Athlete with Tim Conway.  I thought that movie was cool as hell when I was a kid.  "Not as fast as Nannuu."  And since my wife won't let me name any of the kids, I'll settle using it as my alias.  Yeah I know imdb spells it differently but oh well.

Mine is from the episode of the Simpsons where Jasper is frozen in the Kwik-E-mart.  Apu, always the businessman, puts a sign over him which says, "Behold, Frostillicus".  Heh.  Part of a display of weird and exotic items, like the haunted cash machine ("Dispenses pictures of dead presidents") and the "mystery can of food" whose label disappeared.

My name's Arthur Peale.  When I was in high school, my then girlfriend started calling me just Peale.  It stuck, for a while.  When I moved to NY I got a job as a bellhop.  Since the captain called us by name, and there was already another 'Arthur' working there, I opted to have them call me 'Peale.'  And it's stuck ever since.

Of course, this has worked against me in the past.  At my last job as an appointment taker, I used to answer the phone, "Receiving, this is Peale."

That quickly became quite old with these kinda of questions: "What did you say your name was?"  "Excuse me?"  "Hello, Peter, I need to make an appointment."

So, at least at that job, I went back to being Arthur.  Friends still call me 'Peale,' but family calls me 'Arthur Richard.'

When I was trying to figure out a name for my domain and website my wife and I went through a thousand different names. The site was to be about our Parrots. Birdtales was a play on stories (tales) about birds. Hence BIRDTALES... Now we only have two African Greys and the website has become just a place to collect arcade pics. :(

My name is Alan Skinner. I had multiple nicks on IRC in the past, but when I signed up for AOL in 1996 I was 17 years old. AOL gave me that name (AlanS17) as a suggestion because it was late at night, I was tired, and I didn't care what I used. I just needed to get online. I didn't intend to keep the name. Somehow it stuck and became my primary email address. Since then it's just been easier to use AlanS17 for everything else. All my email address contain AlanS17 and so do my screen names anywhere else.

mmm... Long story, but the gist of if...
My Nick name among friends is "Mas"
Thomas[/u]... Get it?
Since "Mas" is just mexican for "more", I had a hard time using just Mas or masman in my screen names.

So I tried tmasman... I've had this nick for 6 years and take is everywhere.
(Even my web site, as boring as it is right now.  Until I start restiring my Arcade Machines, then I'll revamp the site & purty it up a bit.)

My screenname was, as these things generally are with me, a product of being awake in the wee hours of the morning. I believe it might have had something to do with the whole antitrust thing, but maybe not (I can't remember when I first used this name). It is somewhat of a cross between Bill Gates and The Gates of Hell.

Sidenote: Sleep deprivation also generated the name of my website, 1337 Ghetto (http://1337ghetto.kicks-ass.net).

Mine came from an episode of the Canadian show "This Hour Has 22 Minutes".  They had a segment called "Talking To Americans" where they asked americans pretty simple questions about Canada, and see the responses.

This particular episode, this question was posed: "Canada is building a bridge from Alberta to Prince Edward Island.  Which name for the bridge is better:  Transcanada Bridge, or the Odonadon?"  Now, the distance from Alberta to Prince Edward Island Is about the same distance from California to Long Island.  But, people chose "Odonadon" as the better name :)

I recycled my handle from my main site http://www.randomdrivel.com ... like others it was an arbitrary choice that stuck. The longer/detailed answer is on the randomdrivel faq (http://www.randomdrivel.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=1&categories=random+drivel&parent_id=0)

###
Q:  WTF is a "rampy"?

A: Uh... yeah. Well it's my handle for the site. The origins of rampy go back to my college days... To make a long boring story short: Rampy is an adjective that is what it sounds like. Usage: "ooooooh our sink is rampy someone should do dishes this month"
So, it's basically a nonsense word based on context that I've adopted as a unique handle. *shrug* Well, you asked, didn't you?

Mine came from a now defunct comic strip Space Moose, which a guy at my university produced.  The strip managed to offend pretty much everyone and nothing was sacred.  I loved it.  The original site is now down but most of it is mirrored here:

My real name is Earving Stevenson.  I was once a mild mannered reporter for a major metorpolitian newspaper until I accidentally knocked into a vat of radioactive welding plasma.  Soon I discovered my amazing powers and was dubbed the moniquer Howard_Casto_Man!  I fight for truth, justice, and the democratic way!

But that was hard to fit on my checks so I shortened it to Howard_Casto.  :D

(Ok, pop the popcorn, here's the long story)

Sort of a mix or High School and College.

My name is David Hawkins.  The guys in school use to call me Hawk.  I went through the phase that I only wore black, so they started calling me Black Hawk.  While in college, I thought I'd start playing a little of the CyberPunk stuff.  A guy in the group already had BlackHawk as his charecter and another had NightRaven, so I took the 2 and made NightHawk.

Alot of the web sites and email systems already have someone using the NightHawk (or any form with the current dates) alias, so I thought by the year 2099, I wouldn't be around to really care, so I threw the 2099 on the end (also love the Marvel 2099 comic series and thought it would be cool) so now I go by NightHawk2099.

I was trying to come up with a name to sign up for the "Worms" forum back when I used to play Worms on line all the time. I thought of my star sign ( even though I think astrology is a pile of poo ) Sagittarius. I didn't want to use my star sign and as Apollo is the Greek god of archery I went for that and it stuck with me.

Back when I was in High School and snowboarding made me twice as cool as I already was all of my friends and I had nicknames...kind of snowboarding names, that caught on in place of our real names.  Nobody got to choose their own name so I'm not entirely sure where shmokes came from.

It's funny, every now and then I run into someone from high school that I haven't seen in five years or so and they're like, "Hey Shmokes, what's up?"  I guess with some people it really stuck.

Years ago we had an accountant at the shop I work for who was from South Africa. His favorite expression was "Iziku Mali" which means "No Money" (as in "ain't got any") in one of the languages down there (Zulu I think). I thought it was kinda cool and when I got on IRC in the early/mid 90's I used _Iziku_Mali- as my nick. It got shortened to _Iz- when my regular irc server restricted nicks to a max of 8 chars.

Raleigh - Raleigh Theodore Sakers

On Sublime's album "Robbin' The Hood" there are three tracks of this guy Raleigh just rambling on about crazy things.  It is hilarious, well at least when you are drunk it is funny as heck.  There is actually a bootleg CD of a full 30 minutes of his ramblings which my picture on the left is the cover of.  The quote I use "You guys don't know what love is." is about the only line I can quote without censoring every other word.  They used to have the full 30 minute mp3 on Skunk Records(Sublimes record label) website but I think that they have since taken it down.

I only use that name here, I usually use some combination of my name and some numbers.

I was told its Latin for "Causer of fields of blood" or something similar

My other nickname is Philth....obviously, by seeing this one, my name is Phil. My friends gave me this nick in high school when I once spent 10 minutes ranting on some random topic that annoyed me at the time.....ending with someone stating that I "spew Filth from my mouth when I rant" and the rest is history....

All through elementary and middle school I wore hooded sweatshirts, basically all the time.  (Pissed lots of my teachers off, too)  It would be the same hooded sweatshirt on me all day every day for a year, till I would get a new one.  The sweatshirts I buy no longer have hoods, but they're still quite special to me.

Paladin is a knight or a crusader.  I am in no way strong, but I think that fits me in other ways.

Hooded Paladin is the character I came up with for as a mascot and computer game character.  Here's an icon I made for him:

I hate telling this story, because "nips" is also my nickname in real life, and I'm actually introduced to most people as nips through my friends (in which case, I'm then obligated to tell this stupid story)

I had a best friend in High School named Mike Krilivsky.  I guess people thought it was supposed to be pronounced Kir-lip-ski so they called him Nips (which kinda rhymes)..  So I always called him Nips.  When I started hanging around all of his friends from his old town (which are all my friends now), they had no idea why I was calling him Nips, but that's how they remebered me, so it stuck to me instead.

Now, EVERYONE (girlfriends, girlfriend's PARENTS, some family, MOST friends, etc) call me nips.  Hell I'm even "Nips" to my best friend's 2 year old.. (hehe he tries so hard "NITS!! NITS!!!!!!!!!" hehe

Consider yourselves priveledged cause I HATE telling that story (would be a LOT more interesting if I had like a 3rd nipple or something).

--NipsMG  ;D

I was thinking something more along the line of the Seinfeld episode with Elaine's christmas card incident...

I guess I don't really need an explanation on mine...next time you're playing any classic game, just look up and I'll be there!  ;D

Actually, I had a character named One-Up in a comic book I was writing after high school (like most things I did back then, it was never finished).  The character was a cyberspace hacker, who "got his name from an ancient video game reference."  I was RMFX (RM are my initials, FX is what I do for a living) on the old message board, so when the new board started up, and I had to create an actual login, I took it as a chance to update my alias.

1UP is an obvious game reference, is even easier to type than RMFX, and comes up pretty much first in the member list!  Also, it fits perfectly with my competitive nature, you know, my drive to "one up" everyone else...  ;)  I've yet to see anyone use it, so...1UP.

Cyberpunk is an "old-school" term used to describe what is commonly known today as a hacker, but without the malicious intent.

I used to play an RPG called Cyberpunk....very cool Blade Runnerish type of game..

My name is Jake.  Jakobud was some childhood nickname. Not sure from where exactly.  Now I use it on all forums/boards and when playing online games.

NAH - not a hoser
After my friends and I watched Strange Brew, instead of just quoting the movie for the rest of the day, or even the rest of the week, it just became part of our vocabulary. (I have a border collie that you can tell to 'take off' and she'll leave you alone) I just put it down as my screen name to clear things up.

Len Dykstra from the Phillies was always called "Nails", as in he's tough as nails....

When I first started playing LAN games, it just wasn't cool to use your own name in Doom, so I thought Nails with a "z" sounded ok, and I couldn't think of anything better and it stuck.  Have had that name for the last 9 years.

Star Wars. Still my favorite after all this time. IG-88 was an Assassin / combat droid hired by the Empire along with a few other bounty hunters to track down the Millennium Falcon.

Well being in the audio / video editing field we use video tape. When a machines tape guides are out of alignment the tape will ride over the guide too high or too low causing the outer edge of the tape to have a slight bend to it. This will cause mistracking / audio mutes so when we fault a tape with this problem we say the tape has "Edgedamage"

Well, mine was given to me after beating the snot out another guy in basic training - witnesses said that during the melee I quit speaking English and my fists were just a blur.  So I became known as Taz - drill instructor even took me out to get Taz tattooed on my arm afterward - and this was about 15 years ago (before Taz became a popular tattoo, t-shirt design, knick knacks, etc) Being that I have stained skin with his image - the nick name kind of "stuck" with me. 8)

My birth-certificate name is Jared Michael Stookey.  My parents and everyone else always called me Jake, from the day I was born.  The result is the occasional complicated situation, and I blame my parents.  Jared is just some legal thing that I sign on official documents, and something that people who don't care enough to actually know me call me.

One day, someone who knew me well for for 8 years found out that my name wasn't "Jake".

Ben:  "Your name is Jared?  I though it was Jake."
Jake: "Sort of, actually it's officially Jerry." (I made that part up)
Ben:  "Jerry!?!  Well what's your middle name?"

I tried to think of something that sounded really stupid...  Maybe a girl's name that COULD be construed as a boy's name...  Janis!

Jake: "Janis"
Ben:  "Jerry Janis...  Jerry Janis Stookey...  REALLY?"

This thread is awesome, what else have I missed not looking at the "everything else" forum?

I took "Greasemonkey" meaning someone who schleps around in engines, and swapped out for Graphics, and with some creative spelling got Grafixmonkey.  Another of those names that came from a need for a screen name right now and I didn't like any of my other ones.

(which included bksmith, my college email, and "nurbsboy2" which is a concoction involving a kind of surface you work with in the higher end 3D packages, nurbs)

I had my MSN name Digital_Creationist, also a spontaneous SN, but thought it was (a) too long,  (b) too religious-sounding,  (c) sounded kind of boisterous.

When I "found" MAME again a short while ago, I was trying all the games again just basking in light the glowing pixels and familiar sounds.

At the same time I realized I would never be happy again until I had a cabinet of my own I was playing GORF.

I jumped onto this board and knew I was,

Yea, my avatar's a little off, but if GORF did rip space invaders didn't it?

I used to travel and play the old PC game Descent competitively. I won tourneys in Chicago and Atlanta under the nick KingNine. I was at a local LAN fest in Hopkins, MN and a guy I knew locked his keys in his car. I was out there with a wire hanger trying to pop the lock when the cops showed up, guns drawn and everything. I was a bit tipsy (the location had a bar) so during interrogation I turned to the guy and said, "DUDE! We're FELONS!"

I went back into the LAN after the brownshirts ripped out my fingernails (okay, not really, but I had to spice up the story a bit) and played under [FELON]KingNine. I started to like FELON better than my original nick, so I played Quake II under just FELON. I got into Unreal Tournament and joined a German clan called Armored Power so I was [AP]Felon. I killed the brackets after I lost interest in UT and now I am APFelon.

Y'know, I used to think that nicks meant something, like a lifelong identifier in cyberland. What a load. Ever since the Apple II BBS days, I have had about a dozen.

Mr. Sharpy (I was 12 and took it from a pencil sharpener)
Ninjasbane (The one I had the longest during my C64 piracy days).
I retired from software piracy and I nym shifted like crazy.
Earthshaker (After a Williams pin)
Justice (because I am lame)
Thought Cop (beause I am REALLY lame)
Agony (Amiga BBS days. I still use AGO when I enter highscore initials. This was because when I worked as an onsite tech at the Minneapolis St. Paul airport, I didn't want my boss to come in and see "JON" (my first name) on all of the machines in the arcade. Haw).
KingNine (Quake/Descent nick)
Felon
APFelon

And I don't even keep the same nick in online games anymore. I just braindrizzle and type something new (Spoogebob Urinepants is a fave, though).

Too much info, I know. But this subject comes up often on other forums, and it's kinda fun to think about it from time to time.

I use "Bada-Bing!" on some boards to match my Sopranos T-shirt, but I don't watch Sopranos, no HBO.

When I first got online back in 96 I tried to think of a good online handle.  Well first thing I thought was Flynn.  But of course it had been taken.  So then I picked one of the characters from the Macross books I was reading at the time.

P.S. When I use the term handle do'se it show my age?   :)

Here is the reason behind my alias, Kitbasher:

Kitbashing started with model enthusiasts, who were eager to create models of things not already commercially available. So they would take parts of several commercial model kits and "bash" them together to make their dream model. This might be as simple as customizing a staid family car model with parts from a dragster, or as complex as creating something never seen before in any form.
I first applied the term to computers after reading the exploits of the BOFH on The Register. The BOFH routinely refers to computer equipment as kit.
