I tried making a folder w/the same name as the ROM zip file, but that didn't get the ROM to work.
What do I do w/the CHD files to get the ROMs to work?
MAME v103 & v140.

You put the CHD's in the same file as the zipped roms.
Mame finds them and all is good.
Make srue you are running the same version CHD with the same version rom.

While the above will work... Make sure that you have the .chd files in folders named the same as the rom name. If you want you can also have a separate CHD folder anywhere as long as you specify the path to CHD files in your MAME.ini.

Maybe it didn't work for me before b/c I didn't do anything w/the ini file?
Never done anything w/that file.

The default location for .chd files is located within folders with the same name as the rom in your ROMS directory. If you don't change the default location then you don't have to worry about the .ini file. However, there are a lot of settings in the mame.ini that can be adjusted.

This is how I have my chd setup, not zipped.
\MAME\roms\kinst\kinst.chd
and for roms
\MAME\roms\kinst.zip

delete the chd and download it again from a different source
