I'm having a strange problem when navigating gamelists via joystick... As soon as I use a joystick to scroll away from whichever game is selected when mala starts, the snap image goes away. Mala seems to work okay (with the exception of the missing snaps) for a bit, but then crashes with the following error in mala.exe.log:
2010/12/14 20:40:32.10 Error: Exception Message: Access violation at address 004901A1 in module 'MaLa.exe'. Read of address 025B0000, Object Function: LoadPictureCustom, Exception Class: EAccessViolation, Object Class: TfrmMain
Everything works fine (no crashes and the snaps work) when I navigate by keyboard; I'm only having this issue when trying to use the joysticks. I'm using the controller mapping function and that's working fine - the orientation and gamelists switch when the appropriate controls are touched - but then as soon as I scroll to another game I get the disappearing snap and eventually the crash above. Any idea what's going on here?

Update: Did some more investigating this morning, and it appears that mala didn't like one of the background images in my layout. I opened the layout in the layout editor, and when I tried to switch from horizontal to vertical I got an error message and the layout editor crashed.
I re-saved the vertical background image using Photoshop's "save for web" option, and after doing that I was able to open the layout in the editor and switch from horizontal to vertical without the error. Not sure yet whether this was the cause of my joystick navigation issues or not - I'll have to transfer the new background image to the cab tonight and see if that has any affect on the issue.

Okay, had a few minutes to play with this at lunch... Replacing the vertical background image seems to have fixed the crashes, but I'm still having the disappearing snapshots problem - so it appears that the two issues are not related.
Here are some more details of what it's doing:
- When I start mala and keep it in the same orientation, I can scroll through the list with the joystick for that orientation and see the snapshots fine. But...
- Then when I switch to the other orientation by touching the controls on that side, I see the snapshot for whichever game is selected when it first rotates to that orientation, but as soon as I scroll to a different game the snapshot goes away.
- This same behavior occurs when I switch back to the other orientation (the snapshot for whichever game is already selected is there, but goes away as soon as I scroll).
- It does not exhibit this behavior when I navigate and change orientation / gamelists via keyboard. I see the snapshots just fine then.
So the problem is somehow related to the controller mapping and is set off by the orientation / gamelist switch. Any ideas? ???

Thanks, loadman. I've narrowed it down to the Display Delay setting - if I turn that off, the snaps display normally when scrolling with the joysticks. But then I lose the ability to hold down the stick to scroll through the list fast. I don't suppose there's any way to turn off the display delay and still keep the fast scrolling function, maybe a setting I haven't adjusted yet?

Sounds like a bug. Thanks for testing and drilling down on the issue. That will save me a lot of time as I now know what bits of code to look at.

Hey loadman - only had a few minutes to test this while home at lunch, but it appears that this beta has fixed my joystick scrolling/snapshots issue. I'll spend some more time with it tonight to be sure, but looks promising so far. :cheers:
