I got an email notification from Buy.com for this. I can see a lot of possiblities for a micro cab using these babies. It even has the baby joystick and buttons.

Also found this. I'm sure that the stick is crappy, but I'm curious as to HOW crappy... And I have no clue how the SD card slot works.

good finds, but most if not all sega licensed stuff is now made by a company called ATGAMES and i havent tried them yet but I have read about these all over the place and rarely hear something good.
-
Well most likely the physical controls are pretty bad, but if the brains play the games well then it could prove to be useful. But of course they are really just novelty items. I would like to play with one just to see though.
-
I hear that the video quality is horrible on them too. And the ones that take carts wont play some games like Virtua Racer

Didn't Virtua Racing require the 32X 3D expansion unit?

Just got one of these today (thanks for the tip BKD) and it is small S M all!!!!!
It is actually pretty good the video is solid and the sound is ok (Mono) and for the size of the controls it is actually pretty playable
it has a cord that goes from mini USB to composite video, and mono audio RCA plugs for a TV (Yellow and White)
my only two complaints are no ability to save games (but can can start form any level from the menu)
and you can't back out to the main menu you have to turn it off and on again to pick another game
I'll post some pic later
I got it to see it I could use the controls for a Micro cab and it looks promising

Sweet man. I'm looking forward to a mini cab like that Japanese dude's mini Robotron. Get to it!

any ideas how the slot for a card works? wonder if it just uses regular roms.. id guess so but who knows. looks like the bigger version in the second link would be great for a small bar top.. and keeping things simple.. with out having to build a computer for it.
chris.

I doubt it's as simple as just loading roms. It's probably a pay for download type of thing

So what's the verdict, bender? Are you going to Micro cab from that in the future? ;D
-
well...
It's do-able, but I have a few other projects that are ahead in the queue
But Vigo, if I do get to it, I surely won't be lending it to any of your friends >:D

Awesome!
I've got a 2.5" screen that would be perfect for a micro cab project. It has RCA inputs for video and mono sound. You could probably run everything off the same power supply. Searching on eBay, you can probably get one for around $35-$45. I think they're intended for rearview cameras in cars.
I might get the one with Golden Axe and do a themed micro cabinet. The whole project could reasonably be done for less than $100.
Edit: Found Golden Axe bezel artwork (or whatever it's called) and marquee here: http://maws.mameworld.info/minimaws/set/goldnaxe (http://maws.mameworld.info/minimaws/set/goldnaxe) I just ordered the VF2 keychain and I'm totally going for it. I'll post a tutorial with pics when I get to working on this.

naa there was a genesis version. But it needed a special CHip built into the cartrige itself, Making the game bigger then most genesis games, and also unplayable on clone systems or flash carts. So not being able to play VR racing is kinda a given.

:laugh2: I don't blame you in the least for that. If you do cross paths with any of my friends, you might just want to cover all you video game stuff in plastic, just in case....

I received mine today and I've been experimenting with different options on a micro cab. I'm not sure I'm up for doing a step by step tutorial on this since I'm spending most of my time exploring potential and taking a picture ever step of the way won't be productive or useful. Maybe if I get it right and decide to do a second cab.
At any rate, I noticed there is an X button on the thing and don't see a single game that uses it. Early Genesis games were 3-button which I think all of these are, and new ones were 6-button. Granted there could be a game for the 6-button controller that only used 4 buttons, but I don't think that's the case at least with the games in my unit. I didn't actually read the instructions to see if it mentions anything about X, but I'm pretty sure it can be eliminated if you make a micro-cab and do a custom CP.
I won't take over this thread with my build, so when I have something to show I will probably put it in a new project thread.
EDIT: After a lot of searching and not much info about these online, I did run across some pages mentioning these for sale at Walgreens. I haven't verified, but I'll make a trip to mine tomorrow to check it out and maybe grab the Sonic one.

X button might be like the mode button, to switch between the ABC and the XYZ, sorta like tapping start in Street Fighter II Championship Edition

anyone know if here is any think like this from nintendo. my original game boy broke last year and this seams a prefect fix for it,
Edit. Came accross this one that allows you to boot roms from an sd card

it also has expantion for a second controller

Found the Gopher (http://www.meijer.com/s/arcade-ultimate-sega-genesis-game-player/_/R-166164) for sale on the Meijer website for $34.99. It's the best price I've seen for it. They're usually $50 from what I can tell. It has an SD slot for more games and I've read reviews saying it can play BIN formatted roms. Note: The Nano is also available on their site for cheaper than other places.
At this price, it's probably the most cost effective choice if you plan to hack it into a micro cabinet provided you're up for making a custom CP. The whole unit costs less than the small screens I mentioned above. I think the attraction of the keychain Nano's is that you can potentially keep the controller configuration as-is and attach it to your cabinet.
I'm ordering a Gopher. At that price, I won't feel too bad if I completely screw it up. The custom micro CP I'm making can be wired into this and I'll get a slightly larger screen (2.8") out of this than the 2.5" I already have (huge difference, I know... ::)) Plus SD expansion which is the biggest draw for me. Hopefully the PCB can be cut down to a reasonable size.
And since we're posting odd Sega devices, there's also this (http://www.meijer.com/s/arcade-motion-dual-sega-genesis-game-player/_/R-166165) (also has an SD slot).

My visions of building a mini-cab were dashed when I saw the shipping/duties for Canada :'(
