Luckily I have a friend who works for the unemployment office, so I went back to my desk after getting the news and IM'd him immediately. He's already on top of things and will hopefully be able to help out.

What kind of work were you in?
Thanks. We worked for a company that processed county clerk and court clerk records, among other things. We were imaging specialists, handling the QC of the records that were scanned and prepping them for indexing and archiving.

Same company. We actually sat within a few feet of each other. Eight people total got the boot.

Thanks, man. We're being pretty positive about it. At least the severance package includes 10 weeks of pay (for each of us), due to how long we worked there. That'll help. :)

j/k even when ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- looks bad something works out. Just pull on your connections, think back to random people you met who mentioned working at places you could apply, you'll do fine.
You could move out to California! and pay rent instead of affording a house! or go back to school! dunno.. although the financial part sucks, having options is sort of cool

Yep, most the time some good will come out of this change, as long as you are willing to take a positive perspective. You might get different jobs that might be rather refreshing, or get that kick in the pants to get you to start a business of your own. Whatever happens, make the most out of your situation. In 2009, my wife lost her job, after about a year of searching for a job with no luck, we decided not to mope about it and get on with our lives. We are about to have our first kid in a few weeks. I may be the most broke I have ever been in my life, stuck working long hours at a job I hate for little pay, and have another mouth to feed soon, but I have to say that I am really happy right now, and I don't think I would looking forward to my first if not for my wife losing her job.

my company also did a round of layoff last week. well, for now, I still have a job.
(I work as a pgrmmer in a bank.)
then a couple days later, my friend's company also announced a round of layoff.
WTH is wrong with all these companies laying off ppl just when holiday season starts ??
ohh... its thxgiving time.... when everyone is trying to celebrate... let's lay some ppl off ?!?!?!?!

although there's no good time for this... but it seems like this is the freaking worst time...

It's now because they lost the courts in Oklahoma, which is like 50% of their revenue. We weren't shocked when the lay-offs happened, just that it was both of us (which I made sure and gave our boss ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- over). They are dissolving our department and focusing on their payroll and indexing software.

Stinks, and esp both of you at the same time. Heartless.
But, companies still need to fill vacancies around the holidays, and most people would rather just take the time off than hunt for a job, so that means a little better outlook anyway. Start looking and you should be able to pickup something fairly quickly.

You worked at the same place, with the same hours, in a backroom with your wife, surrounded by all sorts of imaging equipment, and the best you could get fired for was "the company is downsizing because they lost an important client"? I'm either terribly disappointed that you weren't doing what you should have been doing, or terribly impressed that you didn't get caught. :D
But seriously, unemployment sucks. Hopefully you both find something quickly.
