...as decided by Old-Wizard.com
http://www.old-wizard.com/top-100-video-games-of-all-time (http://www.old-wizard.com/top-100-video-games-of-all-time)
Since I have most of these emulators on my cab, I was thinking of spending a week or so with each game, starting with 100. Donkey Kong, and sharing my opinions on each game.
Let me know if anyone is interested in this, or wants to take the journey with me!

Interested!

Very interested

This jumps from arcade games to NES and totally skips early consoles and 8 bit computers, so I think this list totally fails... Adventure on the 2600? C'mon! For the 8 bit computers, there was Castle Wolfenstien, Raid on Bungling Bay, Star Raiders and Impossible Mission without even taking a minute to think about it.

I just read through the entire list and man did it bring back some memories. I'll have to revisit some of the more obscure titles in there. Good luck with your journey, should be fun!

On the first page it has AD&D: Treasure of Tarmin for Intellivision. That makes it a good list regardless and it covers early consoles.
But you're right about Castle Wolfenstein for the C64 was a freaking blast.

Doom at 79 and neither Quake or Half-Life? Leaving Half-Life off is pretty bad. Doom was a revolutionary game and set the stage for Quake which really took FPS to a whole new level.
I can see leaving off Quake but even though I didn't get into Half-Life as much as others did, it really was a quantum leap forward.
-
No Half-Life? The list is dead to me.
Actually, having Donkey Kong at 100 did the trick first.
-
I agree the list isn't the most valid, however it does have some good games. Zelda: Ocarina of time should be in the top 10 IMO
-
<- Never played half life. CS:1.6 I DID play, but no half-life.

Exactly. And no Atari 2600 Pitfall = fail. As far as I'm concerned, that was the first really great console game ever.
I don't think the 'old' wizard is very old.

Top 100 MAME games?

Dang it! I just got over my last C64 kick a few months ago. Now I'm gonna have feed my addiction and pull out the c64 again.
Wolfenstein and Impossible Mission both had excellent sequels as well. If you haven't already tried them, they are worth playing.

This list is flawed. Clearly written by someone in his early 20's.
-
That's probably why I like it so much :D Born in '85 here, first system was the NES, i wasn't even aware of anything older for many many years. Either way, this list pretty accurately represents my opinions on video games.
-
Interesting list and it includes some memorable titles. Personally though, I think the list amounts to a bit of crap. The description for #7 looks like it was written by a twelve year old and, interestingly enough, makes it a point that SoM is the only multiplayer RPG when there are MMORPG's on the market.
The whole list is nice, but overlooks some real gems out there.

The List does not even make sense.
Most glaring, was that Ecco the Dolphin was on the list! lol. Sorry, but that game was horrible. Sadly, I fell for the hype and bought the game when it came out. What a waste of money.
His list is pretty much skewed to what guy is used to playing. (As well as a suckup for the typical BS hype) Its fine if he is saying "Top 100 games Ive experienced"... but hes not. You cant rate what you havent played...
If you want to know whats best (for you), your gona have to play a lot of games to find out for yourself. Stuff you dont know about, stuff you normally wouldnt play, and have patience & an open mind, to try to get past initial dislikes to find out if a game really shines.
I literally had to Force a younger friend to play Robotron. It was bad enough he was having a hard time accepting something older could be good.. but, seeing the graphics, he became extremely nasty in his commentary. After a few tries, his initial impressions vanished... as he got into it. We played the machine nonstop for several consecutive hours each weekend.
Another problem with lists like this... is lack of exposure to the arcade real machines. If you have never seen a real Vector monitor, or used a spinner..etc.. The experiences can be real disappointments... as many games just wont play well without the proper controls.
-
The list should have been named "The Greatest Nintendo Games of All Time". There are some other platforms scattered in here and there, but the majority of them are NES/SNES games. Very narrow scope.
-
The list is somewhat suspect, considering (A) the author couldn't bother looking up the proper spelling of "Bayou Billy" (he calls it "Billie"), (B) referring to the former without "The Adventures of.." and (C) putting that game on the list at all.
Also, I think there are games on that list that were/are overrated. As Xiaou mentioned, Ecco but definitely Oregon Trail. Everyone appreciates the pop-culture reference but go and play it without getting bored. What's fun in lieu of classes in school is not fun in lieu of a real game.
But whatever, I'm not really all that worked up about it. Any list is controversial. I have yet to see one that pleases everybody. Still an interesting read.
-
well everyone is gonna have a ---smurfy--- game on their 100 favorite games list, for example, I really like Supreme Warrior for SegaCD/32XCD; this guy just had way too many on his for MY tastes.
-
The list isn't that bad, but I don't agree with the ranking of games, and there are a few oddball choices.
But I think the original poster had a good idea, if we might expand it. There's roughly 27 days left till the new year. How about we all vote on our own list of the TOP 50 games of BYOAC (arcade and console titles from Pong in 1972 to year 2000). We can pick or poll and agree on 2 games a day until the first of the year. And then spend every week of 2011 playing them (52 weeks in the year). For each game on the list we can hold challenges each week for high scores, or who finishes each game first. Share tips and tricks, and revisit each game together as a group? I find myself reading most posts here everyday like many of you do, so it might also be fun to also participate in a year long BYOAC event. Is anyone interested? :dunno

I think the way you develop the list is this: break it down by genre's. No b.s. criteria like "this should be on the list because it was the first game that did x" I don't care it it was the first game to do it if it wasn't fun to play. The keys are, is it fun to play now? Would you play it over and over again? Would someone you recommend the game to, who has never played it before say, "thanks! That was cool" or say, "that game blows, how can you say that was fun" I think the way you do it is do top 10 by console/arcade and then consolidate that into top 20 per genre. 5 genre's - platformer, sports, rpg, shmup, and other. There you go, top 100 most fun games to play.
-
Missing several games that were critical in the development of their respective genres:
Ultima IV -> First non kill foozle type CRPG
Ultima Underworld/System Shock -> This is where the list died for me...First true 3D rpgs...for shame
Rogue -> The game that started CRPGs absent? No Nethack? Cmon...
Many more absent games...so many the list loses all credibility with me.
-
This topic wasn't intended to rate the credibility of the list, although I had a feeling this would happen.
I just wanted an excuse to play some classics from my past, try some new games I've never even heard of, and post some opinions. All of us have games we think deserve to be on the list. And each of us have named different games. That shows how subjective a list like this is.
There will never be a 100 best games of all time everyone agrees with just as there will never be a 100 greatest foods of all time everyone will agree with.
-
Yeah. Threads often take a life of their own, but there is still quite a bit a cool input in here. I would love to hear your thoughts on the games you played as you originally suggested. I also like the idea that gaijinking brought up. If you (or someone else) is willing to make this into a "classic game of the week" sorta thing, where others can play as well and talk about the game, compete on a friendly level, etc. It would really open up some cool dialog where every
I also think we could probably come up with own or top 100 or top 50 to play as suggested, but I'm sure we will all be disagreeing with ourselves on that as well. donbaca has a good idea on how a list can be clearly be made by having a "best of" on 5 different genres. My only problem is that tons of cool innovative games may not be a clear fit in any one of those 5 genres. Also, if we do make our own list, it will probably have to be crippled so the games can be easily playable by most people here. You can't throw Tony Hawk 16: The Uphill Jamz on the list and expect others to be able to play it.

Lol of course it wasn't...we realize that yet the title was "100 Greatest Games of All Time" so you have to sort of expect the old gamers like myself to throw in their 2 cents...even if it wasn't asked for lol.
Perhaps the title should have been "Zeromage's top 100 greatest games of all time" ;)
