As we near the end of November / early December, and I sat playing Donkey Kong Country Returns (and being amazed at it), I began thinking about the great platform style games that have been out for the Wii this year. I know Epic Mickey has this coming Tuesday as a release date, but it would be foolish to leave it out as the latest ads have me nearly drooling with anticipation.
Wii users, I am curious - what's your pick? Also if I've left anything out, please let me know and I'll add the title to the choices ASAP.
Myself, for as much as I love the return of DK and the new challenges therein....I have to stay with Mickey. The game just looks incredible, and having played a bit of it at Best Buy, apparently is as good as billed. Plus the fact that the graphics for it are stunning. DK ran it a VERY close second however.

I never heard of this mickey game
so Id day dkcr because it OOOOOOOLD SKOOO. I remember beating dkc 1 and 2 in one day :dizzy:
-
I played the first level of DKCR. Good game. Still the general idea as before, but it is pretty fun. Perhaps I miss my side-scrollers and such. I've been playing CoD MW2 and now BO for most of the last year.
-
I haven't tried Epic Mickey yet, but it looks pretty interesting. Disney finally got the rights back to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (pre-cursor to Mickey Mouse), and this is the first time we get to see him in like 80 years! (my animation nerdness is showing)
Going to pick up DKCR soon, but I really enjoyed Cave Story on the Wii. This should be on the list IMO.
-
Cave Story added to the list Opt - thanks for the input! Going to go back and add Megaman 10 as well, as I just thought of it.

New Super Mario Bros came out last year.

I was gonna say...
Anywho, the best platformer I've played this year on the Wii is Metroid: Other M (and no, it's not the only one I've played all year). Yes, it's a departure from the Retro Studios vision, but I found the animation and game play top notch. Maybe it's the old school gamer in me, but this felt like a good 2D run n gun in many aspects, and that didn't bother me one bit.
-
Regarding New SMB - I honestly couldn't remember, and I was too lazy to go look it up. Seems a simple solution though - don't vote for it for 2010 (sorry, feeling sickly, rough day at work - candor and I don't go together very well after that)!
-
I'm in for Donkey Kong Country Returns.
-
I'd be a much bigger fan of Other M if it didn't crash on me all the time. :banghead:

How are you running it? I'm using System menu 4.2U with the latest version of USB Loader GX and it seems to be fine.
-
I was running it off a rented retail disc that was not all scratched up.
-
No receipt = no rental
No believe = no care
The game is well documented as buggy. :dunno
-
Don't take this the wrong way, but "it's well documented" in terms of bugs on a wii game doesn't amount to a whole lot considering many of the complaints on wii games turn out to be a result of bugs caused by running backups on a heavily modified wii. Let me be clear, I'm in no way saying that you weren't running a real copy as you said, I'm just saying bugs in the game aren't well documented so I think you might be the exception, not the rule.
I went through the game with 100% completion and didn't see a single bug. I was running a retail disc that I own with official nintendo system updates. That counts for a lot.
Back on topic, I can't in good conscience participate in this survey. While all of these games are technically platformers, they are all over the board in terms of genre. Some are 3d, some are 2d, some are hybrids. Some are light on the actual platforming and heavy on shooting/ect and some aren't. Some are dlc and some are full fledged games. You've gave be a bag of mixed fruit. Give me a bag of just apples and I'll get back to you. ;)
-
I ran it off USB Loader GX, latest settings, and I had no issues. Played through regular and hard modes.
I've only played Other M and DKCR, so my limited experience in this poll would make me want to vote for...uhh...
-
I haven't actually played any of these as I still haven't played through everything I have. Epic Mickey looks great though so it might be the one I try out...

There are a lot of bugs. Hell there's one bug that causes the player to be completely unable to finish the game - it creates a condition you can't get around and you have to start over. A reproducible set of actions causes a door to never open and stops the player from proceeding. There is no possible way that type of bug can be caused by a modified cios. There are more than a couple similar, though less severe, bugs that cause the game to crash and are reproducible on nonmodded Wiis.
Yes, my Wii is modded, but no, this wasn't caused by the mods.

Careful with Epic Mickey. Might want to rent that first. Heard it was horrible, from people I know, and reviews on line. Says the controls are abysmal.
-
Having played Mickey for a while, and still thinking it's a pretty good game myself, I will allow there are some definite faults in the control system. There are times when I've got paint, or thinner, and want to use them but can't....but the most blasted thing I have trouble with is the camera angles. The game seems often to want to change angles all on its own and I can't figure out where I am in the level any longer (I'm sure I've "pushed" something I shouldn't have, but still).
I don't regret throwing my vote to it - but the longer I play DKCR, the more it moves into a tie with Mickey.
-
I've also read the camera angles are atrocious.
-
Not really trying to breathe life into a dead thread, but thought now that it's 2011, I'd come and finish this up...and as all can see, the winner by a rather large margin is "Donkey Kong Country Returns!"
Thanks for the input guys!

How did Super Mario Galaxy 2 not make the list? It was released in 2010 and it's Metacritic score is 97 (the highest score of any game from any genre on any platform in 2010)! Some reviewers are saying things like, "Best platformer ever made," and, "Best Mario game in history." I mean, maybe they're right and maybe they're wrong, but at the very least it seems like a hilarious omission from your list. :)

I wish I could play SMG or SMG2. The motion stuff makes me want to :puke unfortunately. I thought the ideas behind them were awesome, the gameplay looks great, but I just cant watch the movement for more than 10 mins. :'(
