Okay, after reading through the huge thread Apollo started with his comments on overkill CP's, here's a little poll to add to the dramatics CNN style.
and here's the thread:

I voted "Something else".
I always do original. But I may upgrade the original joysticks, and will add buttons to cover the basics. For example, my Amazing Maze got upgraded joysticks (mid 70's 8-ways swapped for Wico long handle leaf switch ones), and was changed from ZERO buttons per player, to 6 per player. My Artic Mini kept the original 4-way with two buttons and start buttons layout, but all controls were replaced with higher quality ones.
My swappable panel cabinet only has panels that mimic original control layouts, and the only one in the works that mixes types is my Psuedo tron panel.
I MAY switch the 2-way in my Space Firebird for an 8-way. Otherwise it is really just duplicating a subset of what my 4-way vertical cabinet can already play.

I voted 'something else' because i personally like having a lot of controllers but it doesn't have to be as wide as most are... Supercade2000 is a great example

Well I guess I have to comment here lol.
My main cab is 2X8 way with 6 buttons each, 1X4 way with 3 buttons. Room to add a trackball and spinner if I feel like it one day ( which I won't ) and a couple of admin buttons.
Dedicated defender machine in the works and also dedicated 19" vertical for a more authentic Pacman/Galaga experience.

There should be as many choices as their are CP designers ;)
-
my something else goes to the fact that you dont have to have every kinda of control to play every kinda of game. it wont be 'authentic' for everything, but i can play pacman with an 8way just fine as for as im concerned

old-school cocktail all the way, man 8)

Is that what we have or what we prefer? What I have is a hulk, but what I would prefer would be rotating control panels. However, rotating control panels often come out looking half-ass and interchangeable panels are a pain... Different methods have different benefitsand consequences.

something else.
My panel. I like it.

I don't think anyone will vote for streetfighter.
90% of the cps out there use the modified 7 button sf esque layout. Most also have at least one extra speciality control, like a trackball, 4way, or spinner. I'm a minimalist and even I have strayed from the sf layout just a little.
Most of your votes will be "other"

Really? Most of the Mame cabinets I have encountered "in the wild" (arcade auctions, people's houses, etc) have the exact Streetfighter layout without the extra button, and without any specialty controls.

My favorite CP is one that would automatically morph into the authentic CP of the game each time a game is started. ;D While I'm at it, I think I'd dream the cab to morph also. ::)
I guess that means "the transformer".
My second dream is multiple cabs, each with it's own CP: SuperSprint/IronmanOffrpoad cab with 3 wheels, MarbleMadness cab with two trackballs, etc, etc, etc, etc.
I think I have a long time to wait until either of these happen. Currently I've got switchable CPs.

I voted SF cos mine will be close enough to it i.e ( :::. )

See case in point.
