Hell all, I'm sorry if I missed this in another thread but it seems if the FAQs aren't 404ed then they just don't have new information. I am in the process of building my first mame cab and wanted to install a large scale monitor, this one in particular:
http://www.bjs.com/samsung-32-widescreen-lcd-hdtv.product.50726 (http://www.bjs.com/samsung-32-widescreen-lcd-hdtv.product.50726)
does anyone foresee any issues with utilizing this or am I ready to roll? FWIW, I do plan on using an arcade vga video card.

EDIT: Old info posted

Whoops. I'm behind the times.
-
not as bad as me, its 2010, almost 2011 and I'm just now building a mame cab.....lol
-
why bother with an arcade VGA card? just use a regular card
-
so I can run at the native resolutions for the games, I'm pretty sure the lowest res current video cards will go is 640x480

you could be more constructive than just leaving a ., how about some feedback, no I don't want scaling, no I don't want D3D rendering, i want as close to original as I can, while using new tech. If you know of an alternative speak up, otherwise please don't soil my post with rudeness.

He had a post there that he made some good points in so I'm not sure why it was deleted. You may want to research people's comments about how games look on an LCD at high refresh rates. It's not the same as how they look on "regular" arcade monitors.
If you want close to original you may need to look at either an arcade monitor or a CRT.
-
I looked, and from all the FAQs here, the best bet would have been a 27" arcade monitor....but I have yet to find a reseller for one that was good. I was reading here about the wells model, but apparently is has some issues as well. it was my understanding though that the arcade vga card would emulate the 15Khz refresh on LCDs. Since LCDs are relatively cheaper nowadays, I figured why not go out with a 32" arcade cab ;)

Uhmm, the LCD will scale the video anyways, so there is no reason to not just send it to it scaled and use a cheaper video board. Just tell MAME to scale to the video mode that matches the native resolution of the LCD monitor. It will not look any better sending it to the monitor at the original res/freq and then the monitor scales it to it native resolution.
-
in other words, just use the on-board video? lol I am planning on making a core2duo itx system to run the emus, should be more than enough, I'll just find one with either a decent onboard or grab a cheapo, I didn't think about about the hardware scaling taking effect so thanks!
-
Yeah, sorry, I have to reiterate what is being said here; using a graphics card to get the original resolution/refresh rate of a game is useless if the monitor you're sending it to doesn't support it. And suffice it to say LCD monitors are not capable of supporting classic arcade resolutions. Even if they did, the technology used in the display is fundamentally different, and it would not look the same.
If you want authentic look and feel, you're going to have to track down a CRT based arcade monitor.
The arcade vga card is able to send 15khz signal to monitors that support 15khz signal. (i.e. arcade monitors, not LCDs) Using the arcade vga card with an LCD is just like using any other graphics card (of which there are many that are cheaper and more powerful.
I hope that helps. ;D (EDIT: Yup, totally use the onboard if it smoothly runs the games you want to play.)

makes sense, thanks! just need to finish my hubby do list and I can actually start building this beast instead of just designing it, lol

I'm sorry... I did make a post and but in hindsight I thought I may be giving some wrong information. I couldn't find a delete button so I did the best I could.

no problem, I missed the vanishing post and automatically jumped to the conclusion of a forum ---meecrob---, lol, sorry for a false accusation. It seem so many of these boards are overrun with immaturity and trolls that it's expected to be harassed when asking a simple question.

Actually that's one thing you can't say about these boards :)
What I originally said was that the ArcadeVGA card on an LCD might make the graphics look too crisp and actually appear blocky at such low resolutions. They may not look like they did originally in the arcades. I thought better of my post because in fairness I don't want to seem like I'm criticising the product because it really is good at what it does. But when I bought mine I used it on an old 15KHz arcade monitor, not an LCD.
-
Glad to hear it, I stay away from forums nowadays because of that, matter of fact, i had put off signing up here for about a month because I was worried about what would happen, lol. I appreciate the insight though. I'd gladly use a 27"+ arcade mon if I could get one in great condition for under 300, but alas, i think those days are over, so I will be using an lcd. plus, the weight, and ability to play consoles on it like a 360, epic, lol
-
Well if you want to play PS3 or 360 games then that monitor will do the job well.
But if you did decide you wanted to play 15khz games then there is always the option of installing a 29" television and using a RGB>Component converter to get native resolutions on your television. I've never done it myself but it seems like some people on the forum have had success.

I say make your cab around a Jtaged xbox 360. All the good games have been remade for xbox live and a lot of them were remade for wide screen. You can still play all mame games and have all the new ones as well. On top of that instant boot up time.

multiple reasons I dont want to jtag it, 1: I play live games, 2: I have the newer style 360, 3: its a new xbox and i dont want to chop it up, 4: i have spare pc's sitting around for building a mame rig. thanks for the info though

jtag's can run FinalBurnAlpha, which is a HUGE plus. But if you want to play online, then oh well.

Sorry you just buy a new 32 inch lcd for a cab so I did not think money was an issue, and you don't chop up the X360 you have now you buy an old one off cragslist. I am looking at cragslist now in my area and someone is selling their old X360 for $60 and another person is selling one for $80. Out of all the hard where in the world finding an X360 now is an easy asset, there are about a million of them floating around right now..

yea, i guess tahts would work too, but eh, I'll go the pc route first, i already have most of the games I really miss. I'll keep an eye out for an xbox for later though.
