Title: Need technical drawings of console controller ports
Post by: Dazz on November 14, 2010, 10:09:19 pm
Hey Guys,

I'm not sure what section this would fall under, so Main it is for now.  Mods, please move to correct section if this isn't appropriate.

I'm looking to have a panel made for my MAMEcabinet.  This panel needs to have original controller ports for the following console systems:

2x NES
2x SNES
2x Genesis/Atari/DB9 connector
2x N64
2x Sega Saturn
2x Sega Dreamcast
2x Nintendo Gamecube
2x Sony Playstation

I need precise technical dimensions of all the controller ports so I can have the control panel CNC'd/lasercut. I need to make sure that the dimensions of the holes/ports are all correct so I can send the drawing of the panel to the people that are going to make the actual panel.

Would anyone happen to have or know how/where to get the technical dimensions of console controller ports?

Since you're going to have to acquire all those connectors (likely by cannibalizing consoles or controllers, depending on the required connector gender), I'd just go ahead and grab them and dimension them yourself.  A common dial caliper should provide more than enough precision to have outlines cut, and those can be had for <$10 (and they're handy to have around, anyway).

  ???

The controller panel is only going to be about 6" x 6" at the largest, but depending on the layout I'm shooting for something like 3"x4".  Basically what I'm doing is just making an interface so my kids can just plug in whatever game system controller they want and be able to play that system using it's original controller. All of my controllers are going to stay original since I use them on the original consoles as well.  I have already purchased USB kits to convert console extension cables or replacement ports to USB.  The USB's will stay hooked into their USB ports, but when the kids want to play they can just hook up the original controller to it's port, launch that emulator, and then play.

The controller panel is going to be hidden and there will be a pop out panel that hides it when not in use.  The only time you'll know it's there is when there is an original game console controller is plugged in.

haha I didn't mean physically big, because all the ports will be small of course, but a behemoth in a kind of NASA Apollo mission control way. I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.
