How the eff do you guys play this?
If I had a cool Tron style stick with a fire button on it I could use that for the right side joy & then use my player one 8 way for the left side no?
-
Yup, two 4-ways with buttons or triggers on top
-
The game that really makes dual trigger sticks worth it is Namcos
"Assault"
Its got be one of the coolest and fun tank styles games every made.
-
I thought only the right joy had a fire button no?
Damn its a 4 way joystick game too?
Well ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---
-
Battlezone lists as Two 2way sticks. One of which has a fire button on top. Wouldnt matter if it had 2, cause both would do the same thing.
Assault had the dual 4ways, but Im pretty sure 8ways would be 'ok'... (needs at least one button)
(Tank games are not too fast or accurate. It then comes down to ease of getting the correct direction without hitting diagonals)
-
WHUPS!! Yeah, 2-ways (up/down).
And yes, Assault is damn cool. I used to want a dedicated cabinet, until I found out I could finish the game in about 12 minutes. :-/
-
12 min? Are you sure? Maybe I just didnt have the skilz, or my memory is cloudy.
Did you use the bomb pads?
What about Assault Plus?
-
I have a Battlezone. It's two two-way joys, only the right stick has a fire button, and its located on top.
-
Any other good dual trigger stick games?
A while back, I bought a pair of 2-button joysticks and an old sound card with gameport adapter
so I could play Virtual-On, but I still haven't gotten around to doing anything with them.
-
If you have a two-player control panel, and a button close by to press with your pinky (or thumb, depending on which hand you fire with), you can play this just fine.

I have a dedicated Assault cab, and I've never seen the end of Level 5 (out of the 11 levels). :hissy:
I've tried playing Assault in MAME, it doesn't play very well with 8-ways.

Ack, you are correct mark.
I tried to map UP on one stick to the top half of a d-pad gamepad
(up or up-left or up-right)
But Assault didnt want to move when hitting the diagonals.
I think its a conflict between the original game not allowing diags, and mames setup.
I then mapped three keystrokes to "up", and pressed them in all combination's, and there was no conflict whatsoever.
Next I tried a mini analog. Same problem. Turned it to digital mode... which switched the mini-analog into digital "Hats", and all worked fine.
So, this is mostly an issue with mames input system.
If you can map keystrokes to your joys using an encoder.. I think it will be ok. But you will want to make sure you make the top and bottom of the stick for up and down. This will prevent the dead-spot when trying to turn the tank with both sticks ...when you hit a diagonal on accident with one stick.
So, if we used keys z,x,c... the mapping would look like this for "Up"
Z or X or C or Z+X or X+C
The only issue might be difficulty in launching bombs and rolling the tanks to the left & right. However, I think its easier to find exact horizontal with both sticks, so may be ok. Also, you do those moves 10x less than the standard driving turns.
