I am starting to consider adding the capability to rotate the monitor for horizontal versus vertical modes. I am wondering what people's opinions on this? One of the good examples I've found is this one: Not sure why link isn't working - it works when I go to my bookmark.
I will be using a 17" LCD monitor in a bartop type cabinet.
I would have two separate plexiglass layouts to put on based on which mode the screen was in. Are there any other good example of people doing this and having success? I would like to do it, because I have realized several of the games I enjoy are vertical. I'll probably end up leaving it in horizontal mode and I can always regret the decision and just have to build a second vertical machine ;). I have a feeling this is just feature creep and I need to pick a design and start on it. I'm hoping to get the material this weekend. I already have the computer parts and arcade parts sitting here waiting for a home.
Thanks in advanced,
Kevin

Check your panel here:

If it says IPS or PVA, it might work, if it says TN, forget it with that display.
And may I remind you that old 17 and 19 inches are 5:4, and thus almost square already.

What do you mean it won't work? I have tested it turned 90 degrees and it works well. It may be close to square, but isn't and rotating the monitor fills up and takes advantage of most of the monitor compared to having two large bars on the side. Is there an issue with using it rotated for a long period of time and that's why it wouldn't "work"?

He's talking about viewing angles. Try looking at it from a bit above or below and see how the colours look.
It might not be too big of an issue on a bar top where you are directly in front.

Ok, I have done this and am happy with the viewing angles. Does anyone have any comments about the actual mechanism to rotate the monitor from my original post?

The link's dead in the original post. A bartop seems small to put a rotating monitor in, but, I'm sure it can be done.
For that, I'd think either a linear actuator or a belt/pulley/small motor assembly would do it.
You can get flatpanel lowprofile VESA mounting brackets for pretty cheap that'll rotate. Then you just have to automate it.

I would be fine with manually having to rotate the monitor. I think trying to automate it would be more trouble than its worth for how little room there will be.
Removed the link from OP. Not sure why it's not working - Works fine if I select it from my bookmarks, but won't work as a hyperlink even if I copy and paste. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I was referring to XeviouS' (user name) project which is in his signature.
