Title: Just watched TRON
Post by: danny_galaga on November 07, 2010, 07:10:13 am

The original that is  ;D

I haven't seen it since it was first screened. While the story is so-so, the effects still look great, don't they? And the amount of computer animation boggles the mind, especially now knowing how much effort it took back then to make it. I believe each frame had to be drawn by computer, and then photographed individually, at some mind bogglingly slow rate...

I think it holds up well.  Some of the verbiage is a little odd when heard today.  Flynn's use of the word "memories" always grates on me for example.  Still a great movie.  It is really something to see if you can catch it in HD.

Will be watching it with the family some time in the next few weeks.  Part of the deal if they want to see the new one.   ;D

Was just watching bits and bobs of Tron again before I return it to the video store. And noticed this:

TRON Pac-Man Easter Egg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgNIzXxA2Uk#)

Obviously I'm not the first. I'm sure some of you would have noticed it back in the day, but I've never been all that observant. How about this one (",)

Tron Mickey Mouse Easteregg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTbjRvKTNm8#)

Cool, eh?

I had always heard the Pac-Man wanka wanka sounds but never saw the game on there.  Very cool.

I'd seen the Pac Man but not Mickey Mouse.  That is pretty cool. Hopefully they will include something similar in the new movie.

I don't remember whether noticed the Pac-Man one as a kid. I remember seeing it the last time I watched it. The Mickey Mouse one I had to watch twice, and cheat by looking at the title after the first time. Sheesh.

I definitely didn't notice any of these things when I was a kid. But saw the pac man one without ever hearing about it. I was a bit pleased with myself for that  ;D

Danny,

Grab the double DVD release of Tron with the 'making of' documentary on it. It runs through the whole process. Great viewing.

The rental I had was supposd to have two disks in it, but didn't. Which was a bummber, because quite often the bonus disks are more interesting than the movie itself! I may try and pick one up cheap on ebay, or try a different video store...

Ohh man, I cant believe it!  I remember seeing Automan as a kid, and in disbelief at how Tronish it was.  I never could remember the name of that show.

Much worse however was some show, I think was called: "Manimal".
Which I think was made very close in proximity to Automan.

Manimal was another Glen A. Larson show!  He had some good ones and then quite a few duds.

Another Larson classic.  And HEY, I enjoyed Manimal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manimal).  It was a good show, for how old I was, and how bad it was.

Err.

 :D

(I also watched Airwolf - the Jan-Michael Vincent years - Street Hawk, etc. etc.)

Airwolfe was good.  Battlestar was awesome, Voyagers was great, Buck Rogers was good (Eric Gray was hot!), Magnum, The Fall Guy, etc.  Man, he had some good ones.

And some crap, too!

-1 for Rick's quotefu   ;)

I was JUST looking up Voyagers!  I can't believe they canceled that show.  I always thought Jon Erik Hexum had killed himself (death by misadventure / moronism) and that's what led to the death (ha!) of the show.  (I wonder if DrVenture would create a nice Omni replica for me.  Ha!)

I don't know what you're talking about.

 ;)

p.s. You spelled "Airwolf" incorrectly.

It's the multiculturalism of the boards... I'm trying to be nice to people who put extra vowels in.

I remember watching Cover Up with the hot, hot ladies and when he got killed, it was pretty sad.  He was good in Voyagers and in Cover Up (good being relative to a 10 or 12 year old) so I was pretty sad when he died.

Edit: Typo!

Jon Erik Hexum was an actor, who died in a stupid accident.  From Wikipedia:

Quote
Hexum became restless and impatient during the delay and began playing around to lighten the mood. Apparently, he had unloaded all but one (blank) round, spun it, and in what would appear to be a game of Russian roulette, at 5:15 p.m., he put the revolver to his right temple and pulled the trigger.

Hexum was apparently unaware that blanks use paper or plastic wadding to seal gun powder into the shell, and that this wadding is propelled from the barrel of the gun with enough force to cause severe injury or death if the weapon is fired within a few inches of the body, especially if pointed at a particularly vulnerable spot, such as the temple or the eye. Although the paper wadding in the blank that Hexum discharged did not penetrate his skull, the wad struck him in the temple with enough blunt force trauma to shatter a quarter-sized piece of his skull and propel the pieces into his brain, causing massive hemorrhaging.

Hexum was rushed to Beverly Hills Medical Center, where he underwent five hours of surgery to repair his wounds. On October 18, six days after the accident, Hexum was declared brain dead.

NOT just the movie, the tv show too.  It's a part of the 70s and 80 sci-fi spectacular!

Throw in some Space 1999 while you're at it.

Sorry about the kid comment.  You're a toddler!   ;D

In all seriousness, those are really some classic shows that you should watch.  The original Battlestar was awesome.  Glen A. Larson was the Exec Producer for a number of Sci-fi shows that were mostly good.

Well, I suppose Eric was ok looking, if you're into that sort of thing. Erin on the other hand- CORRR!!!

I remember Manimal, which was ok. Loved the Fall Guy show. I had no idea all these shows were linked in any way!

I'm watching Time Bandits, which came out in '81. The guy who played Evil also played Dillinger/Sark in Tron the following year. What's really cute, is that about 40 minutes into Time Bandits, Evil says...'...when I have the map, I will be free...because I have understanding"...."of what master?"...."of digital watches....and soon I shall have understanding of video cassette recorders and car telephones.....and when I have understanding of them, I shall have understanding of computers.....AND when I have understanding of computers, *I* shall be the Supreme Being."

Awesome movie...  ...and if you need to get your Wife/GF/significant other into watching TRON, you can let her know Dillinger/Sark went on to play the bad-guy cop/bodyguard in Titanic.
