Title: Leg levelers -> casters
Post by: bkenobi on October 25, 2010, 06:30:12 pm
I just moved my cabinets to my new house.  I was going to use felt casters under the leg levelers to move them around the room, but then I noticed all 4 legs on one cab were bent to hell.  I'd rather just get casters for the cabs, but I don't know any suppliers to check out.

From my research on BYOAC, it looks like people in the past have just used box store casters.  I could do that, but that would increase the height of the cabs by 3-4 inches unless I go with small wheeled units that are probably not sufficient.  Anyone have any ideas?

Fudge. I had a nice post with a bunch of links and my session timed out.  :banghead:

Oh well, here's a few

only 3/4" http://www.drillspot.com/products/429250/ER_Wagner_W9035QBBXFTCXXX_Low_Profile_Caster (http://www.drillspot.com/products/429250/ER_Wagner_W9035QBBXFTCXXX_Low_Profile_Caster)

Or do what I did and bump the number of small casters from 4 to 6 or 8.

Those are pretty nice!  165 lb load per unit would certainly be enough for any cab.

I stopped by Home Depot last night on the way home and found that they have a threaded swivel caster available for a fairly reasonable price ($6 for 2).  I grabbed a leveler from home and will swing by again today to see if the threads match.  If so, this one will only increase the height ~2" which may be acceptable.

Anyone tried these:

I like the one you found, I just don't want to cut the cab up at the moment.  I have to rebuild one of the 2 anyway, but I think I'll wait a bit to get the better wheels installed (once I find my tools anyway).

Anyone else find other options?

Any thoughts on "appliance casters"?

do you REALLY need caster wheels??

all the cabs I've looked under have levelers on the front, and fixed wheels on the back. When you slant it to move it, you can move any directions. When its standing, it won't move accidentally.

4 casters only makes me think of a cab that will never be immobile

I sorta like the idea of putting 4 casters on and then using a piece of wood to lift the cab off the casters.  That would only require removing the wood for full mobility.  I was really hoping for a solution that didn't require cutting large holes in the cab since I then have to basically gut it (saw dust = bad for electronics, saw dust in house <> happy wife).

I looked into appliance dollies and they are an option for large moves, I just don't want to damage the floor really.  I'm not looking to do a bunch of moving, but if I need to gain access to the back, I don't want to lug out a dolly to do it (or fear a tear in the vinyl floor).

If all you want to do is spin it around so you can access the back, have you thought about those super sliding discs?  I have 4 under mine and I can slide it around pretty easily but even rough arcade play doesn't budge it.

That's what I used at the old location.  The teflon pads work great on carpet, but I wasn't sure if they would damage vinyl if there was dirt or sand on it.  Seems like it might scar the floor pretty easily with that kind of weight.  I thought about felt pads, but I can't find ones that seem like they would work very good.  What do people with hardwood floors do?
