While posting a youtube clip of an old Australian punk rock band, I became confused about the lead singer. I had always thought he was American, and had come here to study medicine. Well, a quick look at wikipedia told me it was the guitarist I was thinking of. Of course, wiki brought up so much more. Yes he had come to Australia to study medicine. However, once he graduated from med school he went back to the US. Where he became not just a flight surgeon in the US Navy, but a pilot as well! Just to add that little bit extra to his credentials as my pick for Real Life Buckeroo Banzai, when he was in the Navy, a movie studio came aboard for a factfinding mission for an upcoming movie. His call sign at the time? 'Iceman' 8)
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Dr Deniz Tek

While I think to earn the title you need at least three impressive skills, I give a consolation prize to Dr Mikannibal, who is a singer in a death metal band and a physicist. And it doesn't exactly hurt to look at her either ;D

Anyone else think of other examples? People who have a host of cool Mad Skillz? Especially if one of them is being in a rock band.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head right now is Danica McKellar. Not only is she smoking hot but and the childhood dream girl of most of us 80s kids, she is an accomplished mathematician who has her own theorem!

Dolph Lundgren would have to be a nominee. His acting career is well known (Ivan Drago in Rocky 3, He-Man, Univeral Soldier), but he also has a master's degree in chemical engineering, awarded the Fulbright scholarship, speaks 6 languages (3 of them fluently), captained a karate team at the World Open Tournament, and team leader of the 1996 US Olympic Pentathlon team.

Good call! Acting/being in a rock band are not dissimilar in the coolness stakes methinks. And I just thought of Bruce Dickenson as well, another 'renaissance man'- Lead singer of Iron Maiden, former European fencing champion, author and has an air transport licence (",)

Jesse Ventura - as much of an (entertaining) clown as I thought he was in wrassling, he also acted in a few movies (yeah yeah, for some definitions of "acting"), but also was governor, and a freaking navy seal!

Bruce Dickenson of Iron Maiden... Olympic caliber fencer, writer, TV show host and commercial airline pilot.

Seconded. He also plays a helluva game of soccer.

... and OT VII
I almost spit my coffee on the monitor. Nice work.

You mean like THIS Bruce Dickenson? ;)

Oops, sorry about that. I quit reading when you said "good call" about Dolph Lundgren. ;D

Or this Bruce Dickinson?

Once someone builds an oscillation overthruster, we can talk.

Yes, THE Bruce Dickenson :duckhunt I had this in mind for my reply, but I never imagined someone would have youtubed just that bit! Isn't the innernetz amazing :D
Oh, they haven't. But here's a good clip of OUR Bruce flying the Airbus 320 on Discovery Channel.

Which is probably what TOK was referring to. Just another thing he is very good at! Damn him! I'm thinking so far it's a tossup between Bruce and Dolph for top Buckeroo...
Edit: Talking to a friend last night, he pointed out you couldn't really count acting as an accomplishment for Dolph :duckhunt
I'm thinking Bruce is a more viable Buckeroo Banzai right now...

I'll nominate Brian May of Queen. Guitar Hero, songwriter, astrophysicist and Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University. Could probably build an oscillation overthruster.
Also Michael Crichton. Medical doctor, author, screenwriter, producer and director.

Brian May would be a contender, but not Michael Crichton. Not only is he not in a rock band, but everything after 'medical doctor' just flows from one to the other- Write a book. It's popular. Write the screenplay. You've written the screenplay, you can produce as well. Since you're there, you might as well direct ;D
