I just built my MAME and loaded up DK2 and it looks like it has been fixed! About time! Good job MAMEDEVs
-
MAME 140? I'm living under a rock! I've only got 139! I'm going to DL it immediately!!! (...upon completing my cab. I can't stand playing it on my laptop.) I wonder what other wonderful fixed games the MAME Devs have provided us...

Hey, I know that monkey! His name is Donkey!
Seriously, cool news, but I'm kind of hesitant to do this. I know I'll probably come off as a hypocrite, but I actually don't feel we should be pirating off of an independent developer who just recently released this game to the general public. If there were some sort of fee involved with paying for the rom to download it, I would feel a little better about this.

Its been in MisfitMame or Mess (I'm too lazy to look it up) for a while now but I won't download it.

I bought it twice
Once as an add-on card for my DK board
and again for my multi Arcade shop board, it's a great game!
-
Is this the developer's page?
http://www.jeffsromhack.com/products/d2k.htm (http://www.jeffsromhack.com/products/d2k.htm)
If so it looks like he has a donate button.
I've not downloaded it either but would buy the board if I had a DK. I missed out on the ArcadeShop board as they have been discontinued.

Donkey Kong sucks anyway. :duckhunt

I won't download it, but only because I've played the real thing and I thought IT SUCKED.
I would much rather play regular Donkey Kong.
-
I'm kinda in the same boat with this one. Not a fan.

Blasphemer!!!!!!! >:D

The game is a pirate / hacked copy of Donkey Kong with new levels...
It might have been a fair amount of work to create, but you'd be pushed to say he owns the rights to it because most of the code he's selling isn't his..
If you take something made by somebody else (Donkey Kong) change a few things (new levels) it doesn't really make it yours to sell. Independent developer is probably pushing it a little. Independent rom hacker maybe ;-) If reports are to be believed he was a complete arse over people wanting the bugfixed versions too, not simply allowing people to program their own by sending them the updated ROM, but insisting the whole thing was returned and/or they pay for the upgrade chip which is reportedly why somebody who did pay for it put it online, for others to use. If that's true I have little sympathy for him, sorry.
-
I bought it for my AS board... but I'm pissed that I have to beg Steve every time I want to re-install it...
...---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- happens though.
It does make you wonder why a hack is in official MAME though...

It found it's way into some arcades. I'd argue not enough to care about, but others disagree.

Fair enough.

It's interesting how the line is drawn differently for different people in the hobby ... I can't argue with Haze's position and don't see any inconsistencies in his position on the illegal use of MAME and his position on D2K.
Having said that, I do feel differently about the illegal use of MAME and the way things worked out with D2K. I'll openly admit that my positions are inconsistent with each other. I won't download the D2K ROM, even for my own use, but I have a 60-in-1 board.
:dunno

I never heard of this Donkey Kong 2 hack. Pretty cool looking.
It is a great hack although the sounds are off in the ROM (it uses DK samples, I think), however, it is way too difficult. I'm pretty good at DK and I cannot get past the new pie level - ever - never mind with any kind of consistency. This is why I never play it.
-
:dunno
I was just trying to let everyone know that cared that it works now, cuz I couldnt get it to work when it was added to 139u2 or 139u3. I was just excited to play it. :afro:
The first time I played it ever was at FunSpot last weekend and I thought it was way too hard, but I vaguely entertaining.

That would be me !

It's hard for sure. I can get through the first level (all 8 screens) easily enough, but DAMN does it ramp up the difficulty after that.
-
however, it is way too difficult.
Yeah, I hated it right away. The difficulty, to me, is due to poor level design.
-
Donkey Kong sucks anyway. :duckhunt
No.... YOU SUCK!!! ;)
-

Yeah, it breaks several rules of 'good game design' which just make it annoying, and loses the beauty of the original game.
You have to learn to play each level, rather than it being intuitive.
-

If the difficulty was toned down I think it would be a really great game. The level design is OK but there are a few things I'd change for sure. I don't want to discourage anyone from creating similar hacks in the future though - it is a great thing for our hobby. I always wondered why there weren't more sequels to these types of games - how hard would it be to release another Ms. Pac-man game with 4 new stages? The graphics could stay exactly the same!

You got that right. I may be the worst Donkey Kong player ever. :banghead:

Game designers were too busy ripping off each other's ideas in the 70's and 80's to actually create something new. ;)
Wait a minute... :o
-
Isn't Ms. Pac-man itself a result of Midway just taking mostly the same graphics and adding new stages?
Didn't they do this so many times that Namco finally told them to piss off?
-
D2K is fun, but it is way too difficult. i made it to level 2 stage 1 one time, but only had 1 life left and didn't make it very far.
i agree about the lack of sequels for these games. DK, Ms Pacman...if they would have just made a few new stages, it wouldnt have been that difficult and would have greatly increased replay value

Definitely +1
It baffles me that people think he has the right to sell this and that it's bad to add it to Mame :dunno It's a rom hack - it doesn't matter how elaborate it is or how much work was put into it, a hack is a hack. Think of it this way. If someone made a hack of a popular game that came out this year and tried to sell it, they'd get shutdown real fast. I'm glad this guy did this, because I think it is a cool hack, but he doesn't own it for the most part.

If you want Pacman/Ms. Pacman sequels, there are a ton of rom hacks in MisfitMame that give you new mazes to play. I like to play them from time to time. Sure, they're not "official" sequels, but then again, neither was Ms. Pacman really. ;)
-
My buddy has this installed on his restored Donkey Kong machine. The hi score save is a great feature and the DKII is a bonus. When I first tried it, I hated it. WAY too hard and it WAS due to the poor level design. But it eventually grew on me (with unlimited quarters of course it will) and I enjoy getting far in the game. Cool levels to see.
The level design kind of reminds me of the Ms. Pac attack. Some of the new mazes are hard to maneuver due to bad design (zig zag parts for example) but it's still fun to play every now and then.

Yeah... I wonder if SPACE PARANOIDS that they had running at the Flynns Arcade setting in San Diego will ever make it in to MAME??
-
Ive been reading a lot about MisfitMAME in this thread. What is MisfitMAME exactly? Is it related to MAME at all anymore?
-
http://misfitmame.mameworld.info/ (http://misfitmame.mameworld.info/)
The developer of it is a member here, Robbbertt or something close to that. I know it's Robbbert elsewhere but not here.
-
personally I love the game, I find it very changelling, and is a very good practice to get better in the original version.
I'm glad that it has been included in the new MAME 0.140. Strage thing is that the sounds have not been included, using Donkey Kong's original FX.
Strange because in Misfitmame D2k FX were perfectly emulated. Do you people know anything about this?

Donkey Kong sucks anyway. :duckhunt
What s your favorite game!
-
I haven't looked into it more in-depth, but does anyone know if I can install the D2K kit into a Braze Double-Donkey Kong board?
-
I think it's possible that having it in mame may increase the game's profile and lead to more sales...

I feel the same way. To this day, I'd pay for sequels to those games of the golden age. Especially if they kept similar graphics, sounds and gameplay. Something tells me that if it was easy to do, we'd see a lot more of it.
I made the mistake of downloading a Frogger "sequel" for one of my consoles. Although it had today's graphics, the gameplay was just horrible.
-

doubt it, i downloaded it with an update and didnt know it was on sale.

But unless you've got an original DK or a repro I don't think you are the target market.

Does anyone know how to insert a single rom into a maximus arcade playlist? I downoaded donkey kong II last night, and although I can play it through MAME, I can't get maximus arcade to recognize the game (I have it setup to eliminate clones and what not...)
Any help would be appreciated. The game itself is frustrating enough...
-
Is this the same as dkongx in Mame or is it a newer version? I tried it some and didn't like it. I sort of expect arcade games to start out easy and get harder not start out hard.
