what's the best way to make a Mario hat? should I just used a red baseball cap?
We're throwing a 80s halloween party. Mario is 80s so that's what I'm doing (I don't care how overdone it is, whatever). It's a release party for my Mame arcade as well, so it fits. Does anyone know a good place to find the hat? and those gloves too.. I'm probably going to hit a place like Ross or Marshals up to see if I can find some overalls, but the hat will probably be the hardest to find.
Advice?

A cheap and easy route for Mario's white gloves is just getting some darkroom gloves from a photography store. Something like this:

For a hat, a baseball cap does work, I have seen it used, but it does not have a truly authentic feel to it. The method I would try is to like a military surplus store, and buy like a brimmed military hat. You might be able to also find a fire chief or police chief hat at a costume store. I would then just get some red cloth and stitch/glue it over the cap. It would probably also give the cap a little more floppy of a feel.
I haven't tried this, so I wouldn't know how it would look. It is just the route i would try if I were making a mario cap.

A baseball cab works great. Get an old one and cut the bill to be a little smaller. Then get a piece of posterboard or something a little thicker and cut it into a trapezoid shape - the shorter edge of the trapezoid should be the same width as the bill of the cap where it meets the head part. Hot glue it in place - the trapezoid shape should flare out a little from bottom to top and the longer edge should be even with the very top of the hap (the little round thing on top of your head) Then carefully cover the entire thing in red felt and add the "M" logo to the front. I made Mario and Luigi hats for me and my wife way back in college when video games were still super nerdy and we were the hits of a costume party (fake mustaches, overalls (with appropriate colored t-shirts) and white gloves finished off the costumes). I was Luigi because I'm taller than she is. Fun times.

you mean I have to make that my self too! J/k thanks for the tips guys! Very creative. I especially like the gloves idea, I would have never thought of looking in photography store.
