On my next project I intend to go with a 64 bit OS as I hear Mame gets a great performance boost over 32 bit. But what are the pros/cons of XP versus Win 7? How do other emulators work on 64 bit? I also just read that shelling is more difficult on Win 7 as you cannot get rid of the Microsoft loading screen. That's a bummer. :dunno

I was running Win7 64 very happily until I decided to go with an arcade monitor using Soft15Khz. I was unable to get any card (and I tried several nVidia and ATI) to work properly with Soft15Khz under Win7 64. I got low res modes, but no interlace modes, and I had two high resolutions I couldn't get rid of.
Might be something to consider.

Thanks for that. I won't be using an arcade monitor though. It's basically gonna be a Mame-in-a-box that you hook up to any PC monitor. I'm leaning towards Win7 as it's newer and I'm not even sure XP is supported any more by Microsoft. Then again a lot of software will have been written with XP in mind as you have discovered with Soft 15KHz. The shelling issue will spoil things a little too with Win7 I think. It's not vital of course, just a niggle.
