Title: front end suggestions
Post by: tony.silveira on October 09, 2010, 12:54:09 am
hi all,

i've been using mamewah for years.  after the somewhat steep learning curve, i've got everything running just fine.  but it's been a while since the last update and i have an itch for a FE with a bit more "wow".

i'm checking out hyperspin at the moment and it seems to be pretty cool.  so i'm just curious, what are some of the favorites of board members?

couple of things i'm looking for (which hyperspin seems to support, just testing waters with you all for other options):

1. on screen controls so users can easily see how to change game/systems, buttons to press to start, back up, etc.

2. i have some pretty obscure emu's running that are command line only so the FE should be command line friendly.

3. touchscreen control would be absolutely BRILLIANT.

4. easily skinnable with active skinning community

thanks for reading and any feedback, tony

1.  On screen controls are usually handled by an app like CPWizard (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=74091.0).  The app is run before the emulator launches and it shows the controls to use for that game.

2.  Any FE should be able to handle that.  With HyperSpin you can actually add the functionality if it doesn't exist already.  However, for command line driven FE's it's extrememly easy.

3.  I think GameEX has touch screen, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.  However, Simpletouch FE (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=82737.0) may be a good option.

4.  I don't think the skinning/theme building community doesn't get any better than the one we have for HyperSpin.  Our artwork team has been incredible, we now have over 5000+ wheel images for MAME, almost 100% complete box art and wheel art sets that have been completely re-done for other emulators. Right now we have a push going on at our forums to get Sega Master System wheels completed as well as a beautiful set of 2d and 3d box artwork for Gameboy Advance.  New game specific themes are being created and released every day.  Very easy to use theme creator.

What touchscreen do you use?
