Ok so this is pretty much completely random and off topic, but I thought I'd share anyway. I love tools, and plenty of my hobbies include using them. So this weekend Canadian Tire had their Mastercraft arc welder on sale for $85 - it's often on sale for $100, and the regular price is $199.
I got it for $85. Sweet deal! I would have paid $200 for it. I have only ever welded with oxygen + acetylene before. This is much easier once you get the hang of it. I haven't made anything yet, just fusing some scraps together... but I found it easy to strike an arc, get a nice straight uniform bead, and buff it to look pretty good.
It runs on a standard 15 amp receptacle, or a 20 for the high setting.
I can see numerous uses for a welder in arcade machine building - corner protectors, metal control panels, marquee brackets etc.

I am just like you, in that regard, I've been interested in welding for a while, any pictures of what you picked up? and the work with the scraps? I'd be interested...
good deal...i watch "american chopper" and they got me interested, I'd love to have the equipment they have, thats for sure

Well no pics, I am not at home right now I'm on the mainland [live on vancouver island] doing stuff for the fiance's family. Damn people can't build their own staircase grumble grumble

When the weather is a little better I hope to make some heavy duty mic stands, and see how that works out. Should be good!
