Im about to buy this GeForce 9800 GT

The Power supply in my PC is 275W do you think I can get away with it?
Its a small form factor Dell so i cant really upgrade the PSU so im hoping it will be ok if I disconnect the cd rom, floppy etc
-
I looked around at other sites and they recommend a power supply that can provide at least 26amps of current at 12volts. That's 312 watts. Sounds like time to upgrade the whole pc.
-
Is this going to fit in a small form factor Dell? I wouldnt think so
and I wouldnt recommend anything less than 450 watts
why not sell the dell for 50-75 bucks on CL or even on here BYOAC and save up a couple hundred and build a new pc
-
Id rather not, budget is tight.
I might try it and build a basic PC if I need to. The one I have assuming its going to work will be ok with no top cover on.
Its a nice PentiumD with 2 gig memory, should be fine just not sure about the effects of an somewhat underpowered PSU
-
if you arent planning o using the full case then you can get a new poer supply and just set it on the desk next to the pc
a standard ATX power supply will work fine
-
I thought about that but DELL usually has all proprietary stuff dont they?
That'd be cool if that'll work though I have an ATX PSU lying around although not sure it has SATA connections
But anyway, think thats a good card for my 37" playfield screen? The GeForce 9800 GT 1GIG? Price is right
-
The cost of an underpowered PSU is that it works... then it blows, usually taking one of the following with it:
motherboard
hard drive
graphics card
Are you a gambling man?
-
Its ok ill do the external PSU thing, thats a great idea
Now, which card
The 9800GT 1GB looks nice but it only has 2 DVI outs
Im assuming the TV I buy, id prefer a 37" LCD visio, has HDMI inputs? Not DVI? Or is DVI normal on slightly old LCD tvs?
I like the look of the GEforce 9500/9600GT, it has VGA, DVI and HDMI on it, but the 9800 GT must be better I guess
If you convert DVI into HDMI does it look crap?
Man I used to know all this stuff, been out the game toooooooo long
I got $70 to spend on a PCI-E card to drive the playfield TV which like I say will be a visio or equivalent $200-250 used one.
The card MAY also have to drive the DMD/Bglass
The other card will be some PCI thing to drive whatever is left
-
DVI is electrically identical to HDMI. The conversion is purely physical.
You might think about looking at one of the newer ATI cards that supports 'eyefinity'. These cards are supporting more than 2 outputs concurrently, even the lower end models. I believe there is a fanless card that has a VGA, DVI, and HDMI, all as discrete outputs.
I'll see if I can do some research one which one I'm thinking about when I get to the office in a few hours.

Everywhere I look people tell me to steer clear of ATI though ???

id listen
9800 gt is a fine card if its cooled properly

I have come to chew bubblegum and build vp cabs. And I'm all out of bubblegum.
Ill go with a regular pci for dmd thanks
