Make an awesome robot suit. Don't make a less-than-awesome robot suit. I feel that's important.

Im looking for a cheap laptop, maybe i can put it on the front of the body on teh inside agianst a window so I could have moving parts showing or have it showing a video or something, got to find an old one (windows 98) that can still hold a charge

Thats a pretty ambitious idea this close to halloween. Either go for a fifties steampunk robot (that seems easiest) or something awesome like Ultron from the Marvel Comic books. He has a rad face, copy that somehow.
I think the Robocop suit is awesome. Rip that off too lol.

Way back, I made a suit out of cardboard. The head having the most detail, while
the body was a bit much to be desired. A custom 'Blaster' gun as well.
I got mixed reactions. Lots of cars honking as I walked down the road in daylight
to work with it on. I got some personal complements here and there.
Then I said, what the heck, maybe Ill enter a costume contest. Went to a local
club... and low and behold, there was a guy dressed up in a full Borg suit!
The suit was hand made, had blinking lights, spinning motor driven claws,
and looked exactly like it came straight from a movie set.
When I stumbled out there, (my leg joint were falling apart) A got a
bunch of people laughing and one guy yelled "Cardboard Man!".
>.<
Anyways, the Borg won. And heck, with probably hundreds of hours and loads
of cash spent, he deserved it.
Bots are pretty tough to assemble, while still having good mobility
and durability.
Was fun though, .. and best of luck on it.

Without showings drawings I have made Im planning making leg pieces that cover my shoes and go up to my knees. The will be wood, so they dont fall apart, and the upper leg will likely be some sort of pants with duct tape covering that portion. Im not sure about the body but the head will have LEDs on it for a mouth that I can control from one of my arm pieces that will make smiles, frowns, and look like an mouth opening. I think the head may turn out well
I havnt thought of the steam punk idea but I wouldnt know what to do to really give it a full steam punk feel and look like someone put effort into it, I know I could use some copper tubing and stuff but it wouldnt be complete with out a bunch of large gears and cogs, etc...

If your costume is not awesome, Voltron girl will destroy you with her cuteness.

Anyway, to be helpful, I recommend checking out the Steampunk Overlord's gallery (http://steampunkoverlord.deviantart.com/gallery/) for some excellent examples of crazy awesome steampunk costuming.
