Hello, People of the Arcade.
I'm in the middle of one of my hobby resurgences after going dormant for several months due to (good) life complications.
I'm trying to get back up on my feet with my arcade project and XP's Remote Desktop Connection caught my attention while using it at work. My machine is disassembled at the moment but I am controlling the guts of it remotely.
However, I still find the need to connect it often to a monitor because MAME, Demul, Makaron and other programs refuse to start when the PC is controlled remotely because it does not find a suitable display to send the game video (Daphne actually works).
Has anybody found a workaround for this with Remote Desktop, other than using a third party software?
I found some instructions on the web to enable multiple sessions of Remote Desktop on the same machine and I will try this in the hopes that I can, at least, makes changes remotely and then control the machine locally to launch the programs and view the results but I don't know if it will work. Also, it is not ideal since, even though I can use a higher resolution monitor to make the changes, I still have to be close to the machine to view the results.

look up VNC

I found out last night that MAME actually does work if you select -ddraw and -window.
Any application that uses D3D is what doesn't work.

So youre saying you can MAME over RDP? Thats pretty cool, does it lag or anything? how does it play?
-
Well, I would not call it "play". More like, "launches and runs" but there is unplayable lag and the host computer's performance is about half during the process.
It serves my purpose but it's not suitable for actual gameplay.

Does mame capture the keyboard input OK over the rdp?
I have tried it over VNC and the input isnt registered on mame.

Surprisingly well, actually, now that I just tried it with Pacman. However, I did notice that the left arrow key was registered as the button that shows the palette.
On the other hand, the video updates very slowly, as would be expected.

As I recall it worked a +little+ better over Ultra VNC, but still, not really playable, more like you could remotely configure things primarily.

If you are looking for speed, I have not found any remote control software faster than radmin (http://www.radmin.com/). I remember playing the Windows Pinball remotely just fine.
