Looks easy... but Donkey Kong is one of the hardest games and was known to eat quarters quickly. Put it up against any other game of it's era and you get less bang for your buck against DK due it's high level of difficulty.

Seriusly? cus if thats the case , why dont we start a donkey kong highscore contest to see whos the dk king....

or better yet, why not document the champs competing for the highest score.... We could call it "King of Kong" or something cheesy like that...

I only watched a minute of that video but "make your way to the top and avoid barrels and jump over barrels" isn't exactly rocket science.
-
Also, this thread is an awesome source of info: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=79757.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=79757.0)

I thought the same thing at first but it does get better.

Iirc, the documentary on that guy who beat the record for longest game of DK actually stated that the game was built to NOT be beaten. I seem to remember something about the height Mario can jump being reduced after Level 2, and with the increasing speed of the barrels, you have to have split-second timing to get over them.
Someone able to corroborate?

nah, Mario jumps the same the entire game. Doesn't make it easy though!

There is a lot of really good information already gathered here, maybe I should make a webpage compiling all these tips with pictures and maps, etc... anyone want to help?
I can host it on my webhost.

Follow Jav's link...there's already a thread of tips and a webpage that compiles the info from that thread.

When a person calls any game a kids game (except where explicitly marketed as such - i.e. Sega Pico) I automatically assume said person is actually a kid who's allowed to play M-Rated games after he finishes his homework. ;D
...or a troll.
I think Billy Madison would agree:

games like that are for kids.....like myself...lol
-
since i was only a little younger then those kids in the movie, and not into retro gaming at the time. I always thought Billy meant Donkey Kong Country. (which was really popular at the time) LOL but no OG donkey Kong is da best

Mortal Kombat on the Genesis is pretty good...

Naw, kids can't handle the immense HD graphics and multiple button-combos that DK has. That's too much epic-glory for the young'ins to handle. ;D

Is it just me or does save states not work on 139? I have tried 139, 139 hi-score, 139u1 hi-score and none will let me save state on donkey kong.. what version should I use?

A-Ha I finally got the elevator stage pattern figured out, even though i have read the explanations it took a little while before I got it figured out.
When standing right here wait til the spring hits this spot, then you can run under it freely and safely.
Then wait, the springs will hit two different spots, when it hits this sport it is not safe, you need to stand on the edge of the yellow part.
When it hits this spot run as fast as you can to the ladder and go up.
-
Someday I hope to at least make it to the elevator stage...
-
The springs actually hit more than 2 spots. The key is to go on the longest one and retreat if the next one is also long. A bit of practice to get the timing right and it can be mastered. The real challenge then becomes the wild barrels..

...im working on it. I really cant understand how some people can play past level 10 on a single man.
-
Level 10 or 10th screen? The 10th screen is pretty easy after a while..
Also, the difficulty plateaus after the 3rd springs so it then becomes more about concentration and avoiding wild barrels than anything else.
-
Level 10

To be honest, I thought it was a kid's game when I first started playing it in ~1982 :D
